I agree with not putting anything in the loft. Unless it's for seasonal items that will be used in the following year. Storing stuff just because there's space is just delaying having to deal with it.

Terry, I understand what you mean about the possessions being part of you when you've lived with uncertainty.

My whole thing was surrounded with not forgetting anything, I kept items because I thought it meant I would be able to remember everything and that it thought it would be useful - to me or to other people. It turns out that people think it's weird that I remember all these insignificant things, and when I went through all my stuff I didn't actually remember everything, there were letters and cards from people I had no recollection of at all!
  • My spare room of Doom, and caravan of Doom are stuffed full of things I don`t need or even WANT to keep! On top of that, DS has his hoard of old computers, game thingies, cables, monitors etc., (which, to be fair he does sometimes put to good use!) but his stuff is in the way of me getting to most of my junk to sort it. It would be all-out war in the house to get him to move his precious hoard, and if I cleared a lot of space he`d probably fill it!

Anyway, today I`m feeling good and positive, had a lovely productive day -
I`ve shaken out & washed LR woolly rugs and put clean ones down, laminate floor Henry`d & mopped. (wet rugs hanging in DS`s room to dry while he`s away! Caravan of Doom a tad less cluttered till rugs dry & go in there) Also washed mats from bathroom & both loos.
I`ve de-cluttered a turkey crown from freezer, that`s cooking now & smelling good, I`m doing roast parsnips/sprouts with chestnuts, bread sauce, the lot, as I didn`t do the whole thing at Christmas due to a 12-hour shift!
In between the cooking & prepping I`ve de-cluttered and rearranged worktops, got my new spice-holders sorted and ready to use, magnetic ones on side of fridge and the `tower` has freed up a lot of space.
I`ve quite enjoyed my efforts today, and should be able to do a bit more tomorrow especially as we`ll be eating leftovers so not concentrating on kitchen stuff.
Quite enough for one day, methinks, I`m going to get LR fire lit and then have a glass of wine before `Christmas Dinner`.

    Hi All,

I thought I would update you on "Operation Declutter and Clean".

Since New Years day I have gone a bit mental on the decluttering front.

    I have managed to tackle:
    Living Room
    Sons Bedroom
    Kitchen
    Our Bedroom.

I have chucked out a load of stuff and my husband has taken a few boxes to the charity shop.

My plan is to get everything in some sort of order that I can do a little each week to keep on top of it all.

I have set up a "Cleaning" list on my iPhone and deleting each job as and when I do it. I have been taking regular tea breaks though as I am 8 months pregnant.

Thanks to you all for keeping me motivated.

This thread is quiet! I expected to have a few pages to catch up on! Is everyone procrastinating or are you all too busy cleaning and decluttering to post? ;)

Nothing has really happened here yet as still recovering from flu so I will give myself this week to get back to full health and begin in earnest on Monday next week.

I feel quite positive that it is actually an achievable task!
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

Curtain pole installed in the living room
    Paint curtain pole
Window quilts for landing window & french door
Add shrink film to the kitchen door & insulate
    Insulate front door
Bubble wrap windows & french door
    Wash front door curtain
    Blind for the bathroom
Find wrist warmers & the wool socks!
    Wash heated throws
    Wash duvet & wool blankets
Buy vest tops to go under clothes and PJs
Buy nets for bathroom and kitchen
Buy or make blind for kitchen

I'm busy having some lovely days out and decluttering!

I've found homes for everything we received for Christmas, some of the homes are not the same home that I live in. I am so sick of stuff and the more I get rid of things the more I notice the things I'm getting rid of aren't things we've bought for ourselves.

Although the house is tidy (other than airers of laundry hanging around) the house has felt just stuffed full of things I don't want or meed. And yet there we've been window shopping and thinking of things we want or need. Madness.

DH, for his part, suggest to his mum that I would appreciate a clutter-free gift for my birthday and although there is a little something, I know the main gift isn't anything that will come into the house (I think I know what it is, and will be delighted if so).

DH took this week off work too so we can go out on my birthday so has been really helpful in terms of keeping the house as we want it, he's done lots of cooking, washing up and henrying, which is fantastic. I have been in charge of bunnies, general tidying and laundry. It's worked reasonably well.

    Hope everyone is OK.

    Hi messy pups :)

Well, I have had a couple of days resting more, this flu has knocked me off my feet, and I had the flu jab!

Alec, your words have given me a new perspective on things.. thank you.

Got some things bagged for the cs and I cleared out another drawer. My big achievement is completing Module A of my Equality & Diversity course. Like most things round me, it sits and mocks me through the days until finally I give in and do it. I don't know why I procrastinate so much because I enjoy doing 'things' when I get down to it.

I have made a plan to start on Module B tomorrow, then will tackle another house chore Thursday. I am trying to do little chunks cos I arent too well. :(

Well done to everyone for your efforts :) x

Lurker here feeling rather smug so I thought I'd share rather than lurk today…. 2976 (approx) bits of rubbish, broken things, and stuff I've never used, decluttered from 2 kitchen drawers. Remaining contents washed (cutlery and cutlery tray) and sorted into boxes in my drawer(apparently I have have about 254 clippit clips).

Rubbish binned and a couple of bits gone to a new home on freecycle.

All (in date) herbs and spices are now in an old clementine wooden box on my worktop (instead of rolling about in a jam packed drawer) that I painted one side of with blackboard paint. I have chalked 'Herbs and Spices'. Not sure why, I know what's in there. Looks quite pretty though. :rotfl:

    Back to lurking…...

Hi Terry! :hello: I *may* have slightly over exaggerated the number….but it was a good couple of good sized carrier bags full to chuck! :o

I do feel good actually…and whilst I was on a roll I actually tidied my kitchen table…there is nothing on there except placemats, a fruitbowl and a little bunch of artificial flowers (nicer then they sound). It looks lovely like that. Hope I can keep it clear!
