    Debt-free and Proud!
Plan for this weekend is magazines, old greetings cards and drop bag off at CS. Am dreading the magazines. I subscribe to Women's Health and previously Zest and have kept them all but I can't just recycle them. I have to go through them all as they have a lot of useful info I'd like to tear out and keep so that will take ages :-(

I used to be like that. I think that sometimes you've just got to bite the bullet and get rid - realistically I don't go through the cuttings even when I do them. There's so much info online these days. Good luck!

What do you do with a load of magazines please?

I take mine to school - always useful for someone. Doctors' surgery, dentist, just recycle them... If you've got a pile of a particular type, maybe charity shops will take them?

I am getting so disheartened. As fast as I am getting rid of stuff more stuff is coming into the house to replace it.

I'm a bit disheartened because I've not done much de-cluttering since I've been back at work. I haven't brought any more in though! Actually, I'm not disheartened - I'm jealous! You're all doing so well :T

    Hi everyone,

I hope it's ok to pop in with a question. I've been reading this on and off but not joining in as I don't think I'm organised enough to remember everything I've got rid of and post everyday. Reading everyone else's posts has been spurring me on though, and makes me realise how all the little bits do add up. I'm currently at home with a broken foot so have been doing little bits at a time, which can feel like I'm not getting anywhere. However, seeing people post 3 or 4 items at a time, and seeing the totals they're at has made me realise that 3 or 4 things at a time turns very quickly into 20 or 30 things! So thank you everyone for the inspiration and well done on what you've all done so far! I will probably try to keep lurking to spur myself on when I start slacking.

So now for my question - what do you do with old clothes that aren't suitable for giving away or the charity shop etc? I've got several tops that have patches on where I've melted them with the iron over the years (didn't realise how many times I've done it till I bagged them up!). I never throw them away because it usually happens to a top that I love (obviously!) and I either tell myself that I can cut that bit off and make them into a new top (never gonna happen if I'm honest) or just can't bring myself to throw them away (sad I know!).

But I've decided that they're never going to be worn again and they're not doing me any good sat in a carrier bag, so I want to get rid. I know I could just throw them in the bin, but if there's any way of recycling them then I'd rather do that. I think most clothes banks want clothes in decent condition only? Also I've got loads of old pairs of tights which don't have ladders in etc but are used, pretty sure a charity shop wouldn't want those so I would probably get rid of them at the same time if there's any places that take rags etc for recycling somehow?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Do you have a local clothes' bank in your area?

I was reading about the Marie Kondo method online last night, and before I knew it it was 3 am and I had underwear drawers that are works of art. I threw out 2/3 of my socks. The sight of my perfect sushi-roll sock drawer was all too exciting and I didn't get to sleep until at least 4am. Then sprang out of bed at 7.30 all excited about my socks

    Crikey.

Anyway today I attacked the little bookcase in the study and pulled off half the books. I'm not counting any of this as gone until it leaves the house and it's going to take me a little while as I don't drive and I can't lug it all up the recycling bank / charity shop in one go.

Things that left the house today never to return:

    12. Bag of ribbon bits all a bit tatty or too small to be of use: binned

    13. A load of old envelopes of really odd sizes, the sticky strips don't work any more, they are just too old - recycled

    14. Bag of hair clips & grips - given to a mate who's little girl has mad curly hair and is constantly losing them....I'm 35 years old and I think my days of pink glitter butterfly hair clips may be over.

    15. Bag of fabric offcuts and scraps recycled

16 & 17 Couple of very old 60s paperbacks that were disintegrating- haven't read them but not going to try as the binding has gone & all the pages will fall out whilst I'm on the train. Been there, done that....

    18. Massive great big suitcase. Went up in the loft to put the christmas decorations away (they've been down for ages but our loft is really difficult to get into & I needed to wait until I had a willing volunteer to help me) I vowed not to come down empty handed so bought down this big old suitcase that hasn't been used in about 10 years. Turns out there were 2 more weekend bags and a beach bag inside it. Suitcase was going to go to the charity shop but the zip has rusted up and seized. Half of it went in the bin the other half is kind of wedged behind the bin until I can properly break it up. Have kept the weekend bags for now BUT

    19. Threw out my old faithful very large handbag / weekend bag as I always stuff so much heavy carp in it that the handles have stretched out and cracked.

20.Old stoneware marmalade jar was used for kitchen utensils given away to a frend whose always admired it

    21. Random loom band bracelet that I found down the back of the sofa. Don't know where this has come dfrom, never seen it in my life. Bin!

    22. Some Terrys chocolate orange things I was given for christmas. Can't stand chocolate orange so gave to a friend for charity tombola

    23. A still unpoened desktop address card index thingybob. Never used it never will, off to the tombola too.

Really looking forward to seeing my totals rise in the next week or so as I offload the pile in the haul at the charity shop and recycling banks.

  • Not much decluttering since Boxing Day when I cleared my book shelf. It was a lovely feeling returning a book to my ex that I borrowed 10 years ago.
I have got 30 items to go on eBay, 10 on so far, 1 sold. I have sold some unused Drum paraphernalia and have a couple of others to list. The house is starting to feel better. I will be checking out the Marie Condo method - I want my pants drawer looking ship shape - especially after chucking out 20 pairs recently.
Keep up the good work. I love the name of the thread BTW
