Easter Sunday is turning out to be a great day!

OH has been out in the garage since 10am sorting out his own clutter that he has been talking about for several years that he must sort out. There are 3 boxes in the garden marked metal, paper & rubbish. The majority of the stuff is his rather than ours so this is great news. OH and I don't work particularly well together since he feels that I try to tell him what to do so I won't bother going out in the garage today.

Today I am instead focusing on the washing and the cleaning. Yesterday I sat in the sunshine in the garden for an hour and did some reading, 4 old newspapers have therefore now gone in the recycling bin. Later today I might start sorting out my wardrobe.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

Yesterday was a satisfying decluttering day!

Went through a load of cables and threw out 5 of them including 3 identical chargers for a phone we got rid of a year ago. The rest tied up with bands or bag ties and put into purpose box. I had kept a cardboard box and 19(!) loo roll innards to make a fancy pants storage box but gave up on that so box and rolls have gone into recycling and I have much more space on the spare bedroom floor :)

New paperwork gone through and put into shredding pile or into document folder. 2 telephone telephone directories thrown but one kept for 'emergency', didn't realise they still came through the door tbh!

Some larger items photographed ready to go on Gumtree, just actually need to get round to doing it as not sold on there before.

OH tidied up the the table at 'his' side of the sofa and got rid of some magazines, it had been a mess for so long I'd become blind to it but it looks so much better now, shame the same can't be said for under the coffee table.

Then into the garden, tidied out the outside cabinet and threw out at least 12 plastic plants pots (many a bit broken) that I was keeping for some unknown reason.

The boot in the car is full of stuff ready to be taken to the tip. Garage looks so much better.

This afternoon I made my own granola - 2 bags of nuts used up.

Well done to all for your decluttering. :T

Can anyone advise on how long paperwork should be kept for please?

I've got mobile phone bills, payslips and a range of other stuff going back a decade.

Would love to shred a shoebox or two this Easter!

'There are some papers that should be kept for a lifetime - either yours or the lifetime of the asset. These include birth and marriage certificates, National Insurance certificates, court orders and decrees, National Health cards, deeds, copies of wills, Premium Bond certificates, share certificates, motor vehicle documents, mortgage papers. This is not exhaustive; common sense dictates what is important.

Other papers need not be kept for ever. Different rules apply, so I go by the old-fashioned principle of keeping the following for seven years: tax records, utility bills, bank and credit-card statements, insurance policies, loan agreements.

I keep guarantees for appliances with the manuals. Go through these occasionally.'
