I work occasionally in a hospice and have heard good things about the Royal Marsden book. Although I didn't realise the ingredients are £sive. I'll certainly keep that in mind if it's mentioned again. Thank you.
Nope, nope, nope Lovely - apologies if I have misleadSOME of the ingredients, included in some of the recipes are actually quite pricey. Especially if bought out of season or if they are foodstuffs that you wouldn't have previously tried......
I would highlight Quinoa, camargue red rice/wild rice/spelt (given as alternatives in one recipe, I would argue that they are all pricey - pearl barley is the only budget alternative), Asparagus, giant cous cous, goji berries, watermelon (sometimes - I've also dropped on it very cheaply in markets...).
I re-iterate, as a book, it is good. But it also places itself as a recipe book for everyone, which it should be, but I would argue that some of the ingredients are beyond some people's budgets. But should we all be eating like that? YES. Can we? Sometimes.....
I have gained 8 recipes from the book, and I think that the nutritional bit at the start is important information for anyone - who eatsi'm more minded to think budgets - perhaps that is the last thing you can think about if illness comes.
But as a book - yes it's good. The recipe I made last night? Quite economical, if you are able/have to shop on a budget.
Some folk will be able to afford those ingredients mentioned above, and will purchase them as and when they need. I try to think about affordability and seasonality.
I hope this helps, I hate to think I have mislead anyone......

I am mindful of the thought that the RM book should be promoted more as much of the time w hen people learn that they have cancer all the recipies are sadly to late.

Greying - that was a lovely looking stew the other night, we had dhal (Rick Stein), tikka chicken (Paul Merret/Allegra) and HM flat breads (Jamie Oliver) last night and I've felt full all day. I think that stew might be on the menu for the coming week though.
Thanks for the picture of the Hawthorn - so pretty - and solved a problem for me. I am baking and decorating a cake and pink/white flowers were specified but 'something a bit different' - well there we have it. If it turns out nicely I will post a pic.

starnac - I thought that you worked/had worked in a hospice - you have my utmost respect :T They are a blessing to end of life care. How it should be, always. Period.
I'm mindful of a cousin, with 3 dependent children. Their household income is modest, they live in an area with limited access to a wide-range of foodstuffs - they are rurally located. They are facing their second battle with cancer - they suffered enough 'last time'. They shouldn't have to go through this. And affordability of 'good' foodstuffs to make them fighting fit should not be a worry. But it will be. The section about nutrition at the start of the book is much more inclusive about the types of food that give you the vits/minerals you need. ie what potatoes and brussel sprouts, sardines and pork yield in addition to mangoes, almonds, salmon, goji berries etcI am mindful of the thought that the RM book should be promoted more as much of the time w hen people learn that they have cancer all the recipies are sadly to late.

Greying x
I only work there occasionally but love it there tbh. The staff are fab and will do anything to make a patients stay more comfortable. DH says it has made me morbid though as I have started sorting out my affairs "just in case" I've told him that once they are sorted and everything is done then I can relax and enjoy life and not have to worry about what will happen when my time is up.
I was also mindful of a few patients I know who would not be able to afford top price ingredients. The nutrition advice sounds good though. I will look up that book myself. Thank you GreyingGoals for FebruaryDeclutter 2/50Money Made £0/£200Overpayments £0/£2000 -
Evening GP and friends...
Love the hawthorn pictures. What fabulous flowers on the second one!! I to could witter on all day though possibly further afield than hawthorns
Am interested in the RM book. Thanking you for the link as I sent it to my mum the other day. As you probably know she is currently undergoing chemo for her 5th & 6th cancers. We truly know what you mean about it not being fair and having done all this before. It is truly an indiscriminate disease and yet it seems to really like my mum. As she jokes, someone up there can't wait for her, so they are taking her piece by piecegood to have humour in these sad situations. Another one who is an inspiration daily, just like your G beanie. Still sending much love your way.
And have to say... goji berries are something I tried when I was pregnant as Jellytot so SQUISHED me, and I had such horrifying heartburn, hyperemesis (like poor Kate) and kidney issues that I could barely eat... so I just used to blitz up all manner of greenery, with some orange juice and these berries. The problem was that by the time I got to work, and they had not blitzed up properly in the blender, they would have taken in some of the liquid from the smoothie, and I would end up with these big lumps of berry to chew and swallow... frankly they taste of nothing!!! I shudder even now!!
Hope you've had a lovely evening GPI have hauled my neighbour in to babysit although madam has just woken up and asked for a story, so once she is back down and asleep I shall be off trotting around locally (as it is a bit dark for the beach run) trying to up my calories burned and step count from my abysmal day of indoor toilet refereeing. :rotfl:
Have a lovely one everyone. xxx

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0
