    starnac - my LA fabric has the roman numerals MCMLXXVI on it, which translates to 1976 (yes, I did have to look that up, we never studied latin at comprehensive skool.........;)) . Tell me that was the year the pattern was developed and not how old the fabric is :eek: Still, it has washed up lovely and will be useful for some really pretty bunting....... eventually :D

    Can you believe that we did study Latin in comprehensive school?? :eek: Because welsh, english and french wasn't enough :rotfl:

    I have to agree with the others. The fabric will be a much better quality than we see today. LA in particular was known for her quality. You really had a bargain there GP. There is a huge market for vintage fabric these days. Although being a mere 40 years old it doesn't quite class as vintage yet technically, although it would be sold as such. :D

    I bet that fabric is so well made that Baby Greying could be hanging the bunting in their baby's nursery :D

    Paneer in Morrie's today but £1.59 for not quite 200g. I didn't buy it and will brave the frozen stuff for tomorrow's dinner, I've taken it out to defrost today.
    Did manage to find the bargain 1.7kg of lentils at Asd@ yesterday though which was £1 well spent. Have decanted them into plastic box to save me chucking them around the kitchen when I'm trying to scoop out a cupful.

    Good Evening :hello:

    starnac - I'd not thought of the 'inheritance' implications of my bunting....... mmmmm :think:...... but I like the idea now :D Did you know that LA was a Merthyr girl? I didn't. I am in awe of you learning latin :D

    joeyjimbles - good snag with the lentils :D Are we talking red? Funny you should mention paneer........

    To my other reader, you may well wish to look away at this point, as the thread is in danger of becoming awash with paneer...... jus sayin.....

    So, today's mission, amongst other things, was to find a good use for some gifted beans. I decided on a curry plate - hurriedly checks calendar - despite it NOT being Saturday :D The vehicle for the beans was an easy choice - Sri Lankan Runner Bean Curry. And the rice accompaniment was a given, as I knew that I wouldn't have time today to make naan or chappatis or anything like that. Then somewhere in the mists of my unconcious, I was ruminating on Cheery's convo about fried tofu in black bean sauce. Now dear reader, before you reach for your pen and writing paper, to write into the thread to point out that that dish is chinese cuisine..... I know :D But I was ruminating on it none the less. And then an idea developed. I thought that whilst i had no tofu (currently), i did have paneer. And although I have no fermented soy beans, I did have black lentils......... and an idea grew and grew. How could I 'currify' black bean sauce and pair it with paneer, rather than tofu? I goggled the recipe for 'proper' black bean sauce and then set to work. The result was...... tasty :D And realtively simple to do :D Unfortunately, I didn't write anything down as I was fiddling with ingredients, but I'd have it again I think :D So, 'us tea' was Sri lankan runner bean curry, with fried paneer in a black lentil sauce with boiled rice. Picture here;

    It's yonks since I've had a culinary meddle - and I am so grateful to Cheery for the inspiration :D The upside of my dish is that there wasn't as much salt in it, as there might have been with black bean sauce. I did however, add too much turmeric. When it was stirred in with the onion/garlic/ginger puree it resembled something that we have in copious quantities already at Greying Towers _pale_ :rotfl: The other thing that I was thinking about was the price of some of the ingredients. Whilst it isn't budget cooking per se, it actually worked out quite cheaply. The beans were free, but looking at them in mrS today, I reckon we were gifted about £1.50's worth. I used half a tin of coconut milk - 35p, and the paneer was 69p and I used 1 packet. The black beans worked out at approximately 33p for 100g. Onions, garlic and ginger, in addition to the spices probably came in at about 50p. Excluding the cost of the beans, I think we're in the territory of £2 for the 2 curries, but even if we said £3 - and there was nearly enough to have fed 3 (curry left over) - that's cheaper than a takeaway, and you simply wouldn't get a choice of those curries together - indeed, you may think that a blessing :j - as they are from different culinary backgrounds.

    Can you tell I enjoyed myself making 'us tea' :D

    Today I am grateful for these 3 things;

    for the kind lady who let me queue jump in mrAl - it's getting rarer these days, even if you only have a couple of items. As she had 2 trolleys, I was grateful........

    for the kindess and assistance from my health visitor - nowt serious, just need to chase something up, and they are 'on the case' :j

    for the kindness and patience of a white van driver - they held back and let me reverse into an on-street parking space, rather than driving up to my bumper :D

    Thank you for popping in, putting up with talk of lentils and paneer and for being all round good eggs :D Pree-she-ate-it :D

  • Good Morning :hello:

    OMGoodness - the thread has deviated into latin! You're all scholars! Who knew? :rotfl:

    This morning has already been something of a whirly-gig, so I'm not really with it. I have no idea what is 'for us tea', but frankly, if the day continues at this pace, I shall be asleep by 4pm, so it won't matter! :rotfl::rotfl:

    Today I am already grateful for Fortune confirming I am not going 'dolally' - can't say what a comfort that was at 4.30am or whatever time I read it :D:rotfl:

    I need to pick up a couple of items from the High Street today. DH has started to note things on the board when he has got towards the end of a jar etc :j Of the couple of recent things, I already have one 'in-store', but I won't tell him that, just praise him for alerting me when things run down. His usual trick is to say nothing until things have run out - usually clean socks, on a work day............ :( Anyway, bit of a mini stock up and a breath of fresh air for me and Baby Greying - that'll do the trick :D I shall endeavour to stick to my list. Having said that I spotted cocoa at a good price - £1.69 - in mrAl yesterday, and bought some as I had run out of the 'posh' stuff. It was their own brand rather than the produce of bournville (they do sometime sell that cut price), but hopefully it will make scrummy choccy cake. I shall endeavour to find out. On your behalf. Natch :D

    I have been supping a cup of coffee whilst typing this. It is still hot. Oh happy days :D

    Thank you for popping in, latine loquitur to me, and for being spiffingly supportive :D

    I ended up with a choice between Latin and chemistry. I chose chemistry because I would have been the only one doing Latin. :wall::wall::wall:One on one teaching, from a teacher I liked and who was really, really keen to start teaching Latin. Didn't want to make a show of myself. Wish I could have a word with my younger self :wall::wall::wall:.

  • How does it work Upsidedown Bear - do you tell the monster your worries, or write them down and pop it into the monster - I can see there is a zip on it.
