I see. It's interesting to see that there is a buffer on the card. What is the likleyhood of ringing Barclays up and asking to be upgraded to a contactless card? Will try Pay@Pump when I get a chance over the weekend. What happens if it's refused though? Is there an option to use another card or pay cash at the main tills?

What type of account do you have?

Yes this is the Cash Card account visa debit.

Not necessarily, people who have normal Barclays Bank Accounts can also have full auth debit cards.

It has a £10-£15 Buffer for shopping etc which means that you can in theory go overdrawn (I have twice but only by a few quid) because it can take a few days for Supermarkets and out of hour stores to actually take the funds.

It's £15, not every customer has it, and it's not because of the time taken for debit card transactions to clear.
  • It's an u19s account - but i'm 18 and in full time education. I recieve EMA and work part time. I remember, when the advisor opened my account that when they were confirming the details there was a tab with something like 'Card' on her screen. Where it said card type it said ELECTRONIC (CONNECT). It was a drop down selection box field. I'm wondering whether there would've been the option to select another type of card.

When I opened an account, would I have been better off opening a standard current account?

When did you open the account? On a YPA you can only have the Connect (Electronic) full auth card. You could upgrade to a BBA, this will happen anyway in the Summer after your 19th birthday (if my memory serves me correctly), but you're not guaranteed to get the standard offline debit card straight away, if at all.

I opened the account last week. When I first left school I worked for my dad. I had an old account from a kid with Abbey (Santander) and regularly paid £400 or so a week into the account. When he retired in April I went back into education. What is a BBA account? I may go into branch with the santander statements and see what they say?

BBA = Barclays Bank Account - Barclays' standard account.

Are you sure it's a Young Person's Account that you've got?

    Oh right.

Yes, I am sure. Recieved all the literature from the advisor when I opened it. Explaining interest rates and what not.

Out of interest do you get to open your own account as you work at Barclays? Can you choose the type of card you receive ?

I wonder why the Personal Banker opened up a YPA rather than a BBA? Maybe you failed the credit check? Make sure you have regular income coming into the account, this should help you when it does change over to a BBA (if you don't get it changed yourself).

I have to have an account with Barclays, it's a condition of my employment that my wages get paid into it. You're not credit scored when it's opened, it has to be signed off by a Branch Manager, and you get the offline card automatically. All overdraft applications are done by a specialised team and again aren't credit scored. The overdraft interest rate is only 1.5% EAR!

I see. When I opened the account, the PB didn't say anything about a credit check. She had the screen facing me all of the time, and once she had inputted my basic details the system 'recommended' the U19. That interface is so straightforward. Could've opened it myself xD I think she may have been faily new, as I did say that I was still in full time education and would be recieving money etc. I didn't think at the time to ask for a 'standard current account'.

That's really interesting about your account as well! and you're lucky to get that overdraft rate! haha. Does that mean you can be fully aware of all bank stuff, as you could just search your account and view all activity and any markers, charges etc. whenever you like. Though i'm guessing all activity on your user account is logged. Wow, the insights of a bank employee xD

Btw, i'm working towards a financial qualification to work in a bank.
