I ordered three items on Prime. Royal Mail managed to deliver two of them (dog toys) on 24th but the most important one I needed for our business failed to materialise :(

Yes,but you miss my point. Amazon dont market Prime as a next day service. They may hint at it,but they dont guarantee it.
Eg unless those 2 items were Special Delivery from RM,they may not have turned up on the 24th.

There are several handlers from retail to delivery depot. They often employ foreign people who can't read addresses. Our depot often receives mis-sorted parcels from many miles away. We send them back into the system to find their rightful path but then there's a larger risk they go missing. It's rarely a courier fault when parcels go missing, they have to scan in/out their consignment so everything is traced. It's the depot/sorting staff that are to blame!

According to DPD, it was supposed to be dropped at their hub (or should I say the first hub) by the courier for processing through the system but never arrived. If the label had been misread then I would expect it still to be scanned at the relevant points and be misdirected - rather than actually lost.

However, I wasnt blaming the courier. I just said DPD are not without their own issues and then gave an example I had experienced personally and recently.

I can't think of any industry where everything goes to plan every single time.

I for one will be sad to lose citylink. Where I live they are the only courier who delivered on time, without fail. RM are always at least 1 day late due to the way the sorting and delivery offices are organised. DPD deliver to my area twice per week so are always late and Yodel turn up if they feel like it (usually they don't).

It definitely is marketed as next day delivery:

As a Prime member you enjoy:
Unlimited one-day delivery on over 7 million items.

(unless by one-day they mean "you'll get it one day")

    Depends on when you order:

About One-Day Delivery in the UK

If you place your order with One-Day Delivery, depending on the time of day that you place your order, if in stock it'll be dispatched that same day and delivered the next day.

One-Day Delivery is offered as the default delivery option for Amazon Prime customers. If you're an Amazon Prime member and your order is eligible for One-Day delivery, there'll be no delivery charge for your order. This delivery option is automatically selected for Amazon Prime members. If you're not an Amazon Prime member you can choose to have your order delivered by One-Day delivery. Details of the cost will be provided before you complete your order.
If you're not an Amazon Prime member you'll be charged £5.99 per delivery for Media items, £3.95 for Clothing, Shoes and Bags items and £7.99 per delivery for all other eligible items. In the case of mixed orders the higher per delivery rate will apply.

Note: A signature may be required on delivery of your order.

If you choose One-Day Delivery, your order will be dispatched with the intention that it's delivered one day after dispatch. Parcels going to residential addresses might be delivered on Sundays and some UK Bank Holidays. Weekends are excluded for orders that include alcohol or kitchen knives. We use a range of carriers to provide our One-Day service and delivery time frames may vary by carrier, but all deliveries will be attempted by 21:00. After placing your order you can check the delivery date of your order from Your AccountYour Accounthttps://www.amazon.co.uk/youraccount.

Orders that are fulfilled by Amazon.co.uk and dispatched via a trackable method will have tracking information available in Your AccountYour Accounthttps://www.amazon.co.uk/youraccount. Please check this information, if available, and read through the following options:
    • If the tracking information indicates the package has been delivered, please check with your neighbours or family members. Packages are occasionally left with neighbours, a building manager, or are placed somewhere safe, such as your porch or garage.
    • If the tracking information indicates the package is being returned to us, or if the address is incorrect, it may have been undeliverable.
    • If your parcel doesn't arrive by the estimated delivery date please contact customer servicecontact customer servicego to https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us to contact us..
Note: If you choose One-Day Delivery to an Amazon Locker there's a flat rate charge of £1.99 for any eligible items for non-Prime members.

The intention of next day delivery. Not guaranteed. Amazon use a variety of services on Prime.many not next day services including plain old 1st class.
