Spent £23 today, using my £3 Sainsbugs and Change4Life voucher for Ribena.

YS-bargains were snagged! Sainsbugs shop came to £20.95.
Then I bought 3 huge plantains for £1 from the market and a present for my nephew's birthday next week - a reduced to £1 2015 Horrible Histories Annual from The Works. He loves history, and it includes stuff from the show we went to see, so I think he'll love it.
    Keep reading books!
    July grocery challenge START: £150.
    total SPENT £127.53, REMAINING £22.37.

    How about cheap puddings?

Fruit crumble or jam sponge and custard can be made quickly and cheaply - I agree that two courses makes you feel that you've had more of a meal.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I've noticed a few people posting to say they've had to splash out on razor blades. Luckily my OH hasn't clean-shaved in years (he uses one of those trimmer things), so it's not a cost issue for us, but if you/hubby/sons use them, apparently they can be kept sharp for a very long time by running them over jeans after use..

Never heard this, but I might give it a shot!

    NSD here as planned :)

Had 9 NSD and then my 1st shop of the year - spent $91 of my allocated $150.
Bought eggs, bread, cheese, turnip, apples, bananas, rice, bread flour to remember to make my own bread and pizza bases, reduced large bag of flour to make roti, paratha etc which I will actually make wraps with, 4 tomatoes, lettuce, milk, orange juice, sliced meat for sandwiches which was on offer, 1 reduced raisin bread for breakfasts, yoghurt x 2, carrots and peppers.
This was a large shop but hopefully don't need to spend on anything much the rest of the month except fruit and milk .
  • Hi,
My second week shop(up to 8th January) came to £78.53.
I put down for £80.00 per week, so I am pleased.
This is a great thread, it makes me watch what I am buying/spending.
Next week should look even better, my main shopping trip only cost me £41.69 (with the help of coupons)

Something I've been planning to try at a weekend for OH and myself, but DS1 doesn't eat much I'd call 'pudding' other than the odd cold tinned rice pudding (only expensive brands, and a whole tin at a time) or expensive yoghurts. And he'd never take to work. Given he was brought up in the school of '"that's what's on offer - eat it or go hungry" and has since done 4 years in the army he's unbelievably fussy about what he will / won't eat. Given a choice he'd be on a big lump of decent steak with a few fried mushrooms almost everyday !!!! Fruit cake is a possible though, so I might make one of those and let me him know it's there - and then see how much he eats / how long it lasts / if that's something he will take to work. If he doesn't seem to be eating it I'm quite sure OH will ;)

Problem with doing for OH and myself is finding things we can/will both eat. Has to be low fat (both have high cholesterol - he's on meds, I'm trying to control by diet), low sugar (I'm high risk of T2 diabetes) and dairy free as I'm lactose intolerant (he doesn't eat custard or milk puddings anyway, so not even a case of being able to make them with soya milk - and if I could that makes them expensive compared to using normal milk). I'm much more likely to do a veg based soup for us as a starter than mess about trying to sort puddings - apart from special occasions when I may do both.

I think this is one reason my grocery bill seems to be coming in higher than I expected / thought. I juat have so many restrictions I need to try and stick to that a lot of the things I could do to try and bring it down aren't really viable options for me.

  • Only £2 spent on milk today so pleased with that.

Off now to make a chocolate Victoria Sandwich, which will double up for pudding for the next couple of days.

Beef casserole to make for this evening so long as the beef defrosts in time!
