  • Need to add what I spent yesterday $60 on fruit & veg and a lge tub of LF yoghurt for hubby
If your thinking it sounds like a lot if $$ it is,, decent f & v is very expensive here.
And I'm a little jealous our supermarkets don't have yellow stickers :( They do have reduced goods but it depends on the supermarket and its usually only reduced by a few dollars
Love people use things. The opposite never works.

Hi Bob, Not sure if this is helpful, but You might want to consider a bargains allowance as mentioned before?

This lets you take advantage of great offers and stock up on 'luxuries' to see you through the lean times. I do this as it means if and when I'm completely broke, I don't feel like I am - still eating steaks, roasts, berries, cheeses.

For example - before christmas I wandered about and had a look at the use by dates on the huge numbers of turkeys, ducks and geese in my nearest supermarkets. Many had dates between christmas and new year, so on the 28th I asked my dad to give me a lift and went and checked for reductions.

Got 3 whole 2.5kg ducks, a 2.8kg turkey crown, and two turkey legs for £20.

In the freezer (the turkey chunked into 4) that will do me well for the coming year - the ducks will do a posh roast at easter and on my birthday, and at some other point, plus leftovers for stirfrys/ sarnies.

The turkey will do curries, pies and stirfrys with each chunk doing meals for a week and the legs probably doing a sunday lunch each.

I did the same thing when tesco online were offering whole salmon at £5 per kilo.

I spent £80 (), but ended up with 4 whole salmon, filleting into quarters - meaning I've 16 very impressive lumps of salmon that again will do a very impressive roast, can be split into steaks, en croute, jacket potato filling - each one will feed me for a week plus the cats ate salmon heads/tails and I ended up with a boat load of fish stock.

On a more day to day level, this board and the grabit board is worth keeping an eye on - a few years back tesco offered 500g bags of pasta for 9p - I bought £5 worth (that's around 30 kilos...). Haven't had to buy pasta since :rotfl:

Thank you so much for those ideas. That's an amazing way to stock up and one I wouldn't have thought of. You must be so happy with that little lot. Thank you.

    Hi all,

Late one from me, work tomorrow and brain doing overtime.....

    NSD here :)

Made 2 x shep, pies one for freezer one for dinner.

Also made some fudge to take into work as I forgot to buy the cakes we are oblidged to buy for birthdays before Xmas.

Apart from doing some ironing that was about it....
Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

  • Good evening!

Mixed day for me today. I spent most of the afternoon cooking meals for the next few days, with extras for the freezer. That was a positive. However, my NSD was a fail as I forgot to buy some bits for the boys lunchboxes on Friday. I only spent £2.97, so it wasn't too bad. 49p of that was on RTC donuts, though. I could have done without them. Especially as I'm supposed to be dieting :)

On the whole, happy with it, but I could do better.

A total spend of £65.85 for this week. I've got a tesco delivery lined up for Tuesday, hoping to keep it to under £40 and won't need much meat from the butchers. Possibly going out for a birthday meal on Thursday, we have a voucher for the restaurant and hopefully won't overspend by too much!

I've just cleaned out the baking cupboard, I was getting very fed up with stuff constantly falling out :o Much better now! Tomorrow I'm going to try baking HM bread again, but I'm generally poor at making yeasted bread.

It was nearly a no-spend day for me, but then I went and got a 39p Kindle book... oh well, I came close!

Can someone please tell me what "pigs in blankets" are. Noticed a ref to them today, and saw a lot of chat prior to Christmas about them. Visions of tiny, blue piglets, wrapped in blankets, but know that will be wrong!

Basically - Sausages wrapped in bacon and oven cooked.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Going to use hm veggie shepherds pies from the freezer tonight and if I'm back from course in time to put them on it will be jacket pots for lunch. DH first day back at work after Christmas today, school doesn't start back till tomorrow so DS1 still at home and I've just got the course, but it's a longer shift than my normal work day.
