Well after pricey emergency food from the m&s at the petrol station, getting a couple of bags of ikea coffee and a *small voice* Mr W'trose shop, I'm up to £36.54/£100 already.

Have meal planned for myself until Friday, currently trying to work out what weekend meals I can do without buying more food. In addition, OH would like some batch cooking to take away with him during the week, as the food at work seems to be rather 'spensive for the quality... Now I know I am lucky to be with a chap who doesn't just spend on these things willy-nilly, so I'm not complaining, but it might take some practice to do it on budget!

Of course, I could always get him to pay for the extra... :D

    Hiya all.

No spends yet but fridge is looking rather bare. Freezers have lotd of makings of meals tho abd my challenge is to use most of this up. Ive meal planned for nearly 3 weeks so should be very possible. Will do a mr a cnc for tomorrow if there is a slot and the that should be all for a couple weeks bar some milk n fruit n veg next week.

Very very nearly finished the chrimbo cheese.....
  • So, off to A**I this morning and spent £9.81, which was mainly fresh fruit and veg then £6 in T**co for the extra bits I needed.

Made some ginger nut biscuits before I went and am still eating up the banana loaf from the weekend. Chilli for dinner plus there will be plenty left over for another day.

    Off to update my sig.
  • Happy New Year - we are just back from a week away with DS so our month starts here!
Today I have shopped Mr A**i and a couple of bits - so will update sig later. Trying to manage on £160 for 4 weeks just for food. We have lots of cleaning stuff stocked up. Need to find my last post to see what I had decided and need to get DH on board too!!

Hello All. I did a top up shop of fruit and veg, milk, eggs and a few other bits. Came to just over £28. I have updated my signature.

Like some others I don't manage to get many marked down items. Just doesn't work with my timings or the stores we have locally. As a family of 5 I find it near impossible to shop once a week. We always need milk again or fruit. My large fridge just isn't large enough for a weeks supply. So instead I aim for low spend days (LSD) where I only pick up that milk or fruit and don't add impulse buys. HTH someone. Its finding the system that works best for your circumstances. Xx

    Good evening,

I did the Marks shop as planned, found very little YS stuff and none that served be, but got:
    two x10 pack eggs,
    2 loaves of seeded bread,
    6 avocados,
a very large chunk of extra mature cheddar on offer,
    1 bunch of spring onions,
    1 pack of mushrooms,
    2 pints of organic milk,
    2 lettuces,
    a pack of mixed peppers,
2 butternut squash lasagne, good for DH and DS dinner emergency
1 pack Mortadella for my builder's sandwiches (will last into tomorrow too).

Total after £5 off voucher and special deals, £19.01. Not amazing but not too bad. Pity about not finding YSs, will have to visit later in the day next week.

    Updating sig now.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Is it still possible to join this? I'm challenging myself to £20 per week for my grocery spend (£80 monthly). In my first week (as was away with the family last week and didn't have to get groceries).

Could I be added to the challenge please?

    Thank you!

hi beckie, welcome to the thread. if you can highlight your target allowance in red and bold it makes it easier for the keepers of the lists to spot it

I've been trying to reply to this thread since yesterday, life keeps interrupting me lol

Anyway we've all got stinking colds and coughs so decided to make pie for dinner yesterday with spring onions instead of going out for 1 leek so Sunday was an NSD.

Today I went to the butchers and bought 2 pork chops and 1 pork loin chop (for DS and DD to share) for dinner which cost me £3.75 I also ordered my bone in pork shoulder to try this JO recipe in the Save with cookbook, this will cost around £18 but the recipe serves 6-8 with leftovers and we are 2 adults and 2 toddlers so I think it should stretch a bit further lol. Also went to SM and bought DD milk £4.17!!! and bread and milk for us too, total there £6.18. Almost forgot as I was running behind bought lunch out, took drinks, for £5.

Tomorrow I need to do another shop as I forgot toilet roll and washing up liquid and we are low on both. Plus other food for the week, when I get organised enough!

You need a lot of willpower if nipping to the shops on numerous occasions (well I do as I am too tempted by the offers) As a family of 6 I do only 1 big shop per week.
I freeze bread and milk so it lasts the week. I know we go through 6-7 loaves and 24 pints so I buy that much and freeze half.
Fruit I spend a set amount on it and if it runs out before the end of the week we go without. I buy enough to ensure the kids can have fruit everyday. The only reason it runs out early is if they are eating more than their 'fair-share'.

This works for us and I have no problem with them not having fruit for a day or so if it has all been eaten. I have the same rule for biscuits/treats. If they are piggies and scoff it all in 2 days they go 5 days without. I have been doing this for years now, as much to do with budgetting as a life lesson, to show that things can be rationed over a week and they can then enjoy them each day rather than having a binge and bust mentality.

I can now quite confidently buy a weeks worth of fruit/puddings/biscuits and know that more often than not it will last a week... Of course there are occasions it doesn't;)
