Went to Waitrose on Friday to take advantage of the half-price meat sale. Typically, all the bargain chickens had gone, but still picked up bargain pork chops and veal mince.

Also, because I think loads of people had gone for cheap chicken instead of their usual choice, there was loads of stuff marked down, so I got a load of other stuff half price or better. Freezer filled for under £20!

Went to town the next day, but spendthrift OH was with me, so he went mad in the cheese shop.

It is really nice in there though...

  • Big weekly shop today total of £61.95. Will need a top up for bread during the week but should be okay for most other things. Got a pile of venison and made a vast pot of stew bulked out with celery and carrots- should get at least 4 meals for the two of us out of that.

  • Which cheese did you buy? I usually buy the mild cheddar at £1.75 for 350g!

Thats what I bought too. Yep it probably works out cheaper, however I bought 2, because I didn't think 1 would have lasted for the packed lunches for the week. If I was in Tesco, I would have just bought the 1. Its the same with the muffins. I bought 2 packs of 4 because there are 5 of us. A 6 pack from Tesco would have done. Lol.

Debating what to do about yesterday's home delivery blip :( £20 was medicine and DVDs
I wouldn't count DVDs or medicine in this challenge either. DVDs would come out of personal budgets and medicine would be written down as 'other' and I would find some pennies by the end of the year from somewhere to cover such.

Yesterday was another NSD. Today DH volunteered to go shopping as he wanted to go a couple of places anyways, so for once he stuck to the little list I made - spend of £4.54 :j

Hope you all keeping warm and safe

  • OH decided today wouldn't be a NSD, apparently the YS Sweet Potatoes in Asd@ were irresistible. Only £1.28 to add, 2 bags were purchased. They'll go into soups and stuff for lunches. I couldn't complain, really, as I was presented with an Audrey Hepburn calendar that they'd found in the clearance. (That wasn't paid for with grocery money)

DS2 spent his Xmas Money. He was also diagnosed with tonsillitis, so he'll be off school tomorrow, poor wee mite. :( He's in fairly good spirits, though, especially as he gets to skip school :)

    Good morning, all,

I've never had as many NSDs as this January, lol. I've not been out much and we had lots of food from Christmas, New Year and birthday to eat up. So far I've been shopping twice and will go again on Tuesday where I will need to stock up on meat and veg and will probably frequent 3 out of 4 shops ( Lidl, Aldi and M's).
I must say that I don't really like freezer and larder cooking, I just enjoy food shopping! But it certainly helps my wallet...

On shop 2 I spent half of the budget on Lidl DIY offers which I have included in the target so far but if I go over I'll take it off.

    Hi everyone,

Well we have 91p to last us until payday on Friday! Oops blown the budget again this month. I'm now working every day but part time hours, and non-fixed hours, which makes it hard to plan to go to Aldi (8 miles away). Result is we've almost exclusively used Tesco this month as it's in the town and walkable. Despite getting 2p off a litre of fuel and Clubcard points, I still feel like Tesco isn't value for money for us.

We are away for a week in February (fully catered) but I will leave the budget as it is - £450 - as I'd like to get the freezer and cupboards stocked. We currently have no cheese in the house, which is causing no end of moaning!

    Have a good day all

  • Hope those who are poorly, and their families feel better soon!

Another NSD today, more money tomorrow so writing a small shopping list to maybe last until Friday then another shop will be done. We're low on fruit and no cereal so we had egg and toast for breakfast.

I'm finding it easier to avoid shops now DS is no longer in the pushchair as I want to avoid trying to shop with him  though he was well behaved the last (and first) time I went shopping with him.

I might move my big online shop though, I was waiting until Tuesday next week to get the £1 delivery but I shall have to see if I can wait for the big items until then.

That makes sense, did you see the huge blocks on cheese, think 800g for £3.85?
