Ah well in fairness, my OB is really good! As a scientist, I'd usually go away pop on my logical brain for an hour or so and do my own research
They are pretty good at respecting your wishes here ( I suppose they have to?) especially if your husband says so! Lol
The private hospitals here are fantastic in terms of facilities - everyone gets own rooms, places are spotless but you do pay for it!! I'm slightly more worried about the aftercare here eg my baby will not be leaving my side and they will be respectful of my wish to breastfeed whether they like it or not! The language barrier as well is a concern..
The marriage thing is horrendous- the stories I've heard! Young maids (probably forced into it) handcuffed to beds while giving birth and babies been placed in orphanages... It's a !!!! place but We here to earn money to pay off a house, otherwise I'd be hot footing it home.094 Sealed pot member! (7) €185 (8) €138 (9) €€250

I had a report sent to social services after the staff hadn't done the hourly blood tests for 24 hours which they were supposed to have done and then said they were putting a woman with a stomach bug in the 2 bed room with me.. that was the point I actually said I was leaving.. I don't do the childrens vomit, or my own I was not risking my baby or myself getting ill because the place that is supposed to prevent illness made us ill.. hot footed it I did.. on my crutches, with no pain relief at all 24 hours after a section.. such is my emetophobia! They said you are leavig against against medical advice.. I said I'm leaving because you haven't done your job, you've refused me pain relief (she was born at 10:30am, I had pain meds at 6am and nothing until OH got to tesco at 8pm ... I was in agony!!) and now you are putting someone upchucking in my room.. no chance I'm staying!
You aren't offered much in the way of BF support here either the midwives have little to no training and HV's arent worth the tea they drink. They all like formula, it makes it easy to see how much baby is being fed and that is what they have liked since the 50's .. its a hard mindset to change. I wasn't even asked i I was breastfeeding just asked what milk I wanted for mine! .. of course I said goats! lol
I sometimes think there is a language barrier here too.. no 'means ignore me and do as you like', yes means 'no' and could you give me some evidence to support that claim means 'ring SS because I'm unreasonable' haha..
If I could afford to pay for private care here I would, in a second.. but I refuse to be treated like cattle.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Sorry to hear about your cat hun, what a horrible way to find them as well
In relation to the 16 wk appointment, I never even had a 16 wk appt nor have they ever let me hear the heartbeat (I have seen it on both scans and heard it on my own doppler). Think my next one is 9th March now which will be 26 wks.Married 1st October 2015:heartpuls

I don't quite understand why they have you testing an hour after meals .. that is when your blood sugar will be at its highest..
A fasting blood of 4.8 is perfectly normal (for reference I checked mine .. 4.7 having not eaten since 11pm it is 4.2 when I tested last time many months ago).. I wouldn't say you had any kind of diabetes based on those results.. 9.0 an hour after eating a jacket potato with beans is perfect.. just where it should be.. (butter is carb free so fine .. beans however have 15.5g of carbs per 100g thats 1/4 of a big tin.. so a full tin would be 62g)
A fasting blood of over 10 would indicate diabetes.. 4.8 is absolutely spot on. I'd be asking for a second opinion from someone who actually knows what they are talking about!
Plus gestational diabetes doesnt usually occur until after 28 weeks which is why they don't test until 24 weeks as a general rule.
OMG... I'm so boring haha.. is this what my life has come to.. knowing how many carbs are in baked beans and what blood glucose readings should be?
Lol, you have really put my mind at ease. TBH i dont even know anyone close with diabetes so was all a bit scary. They based my diagnosis on the reading after i had my glucose mixture. Apparently it should have been under 7.8 but mine was 8.9. I remember the lady saying its not high for yourself its more the baby we are concerned for. I went for my scan last night and babys weight has put me over a week forward, so i am 27weeks 2days but due to the babies weight i am 28weeks 3 days. They showed me on the scale that the babies weight is at the top end but hopefully with some exercise and diet i should be able to control it , if not it will be tabs or insulin.
I have my dietician appt today. Last night i had vegetarian sausages with lots of salad spinach, watercress and rocket (the salad was vile lol, i think i need to get some dressing for it) and then went for a 30 minute walk and did my reading and it was 4.9.
BTW brought the carbsandcal app. Hopefully can start eating some nice food without worrying. Looks really interesting.0 -
Euronorris it certainly is nice to have people to talk to on hear. You guys have been great and cant thank you enough. I know i should have gone to the next forum as i am 27 weeks now but dont know which it is and i quite like it here lol.
flutterbyuk25 Unfortunately everything you read isnt everything you get. It certainly does make it more difficult and worrying for ftm who don't know what to expect.. My 16 weeks appt was 5 minutes because midwife was running 45 minutes late. I couldn't connect with her so i got another midwife who actually seems like she cares.
BTW Sorry about your cat.0 -

khal I'm actually on metaformin as I used it due to my PCOS and fertility issues, try not to worry about it is the best advice I can give!
Pigpen, my version of language barrier is very similar, the majority of staff will speak English but they don't understand everything :rotfl: my husbands Irish accent is really thick as well so should be a hoot to translate!
We don't get HV here, which is a pity as I know back home the local ones are great, and also really close to my friend who is a midwife. We have one check up at 6 weeks and that's that.
Heading to buy some new jeans this weekend - really need them now at this stage :rotfl:094 Sealed pot member! (7) €185 (8) €138 (9) €€250

I love the app.. the plate with 3 mini eggs and a knife and fork is hilarious.. and the chocolate bunnies.. I sometimes look through it for a giggle.
My inhabitant is ginormous too.. they moved my due date forward by 9 days despite the fact there is absolutely no way it could have been conceived then because i was still on my period! (CD7) and there was no activity for a further 9 days.. eggs do not live that long!.. my OH is 6ft 4 though so it may simply be a monster, my last one was 4 weeks early and 7lb 2 so that is a possibility... though compared to our last three I am absolutely tiny in the bump dept. I don't think I've got any bigger for weeks.. not really complaining as we still haven't told anyone haha!! My OH and 6 oldest children know.
tata.. I can see the accents making things fun.. haha.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
It still astounds me, even now, how much of a difference there is between service levels across the country.
We've been very lucky we are, in that the midwives we have seen have all been great and I haven't had any difficulty in getting appointments at appropriate times etc. My sister was even surprised that I had my 20 week scan at 20 weeks, as she said she had to wait until she was closer to 24 weeks for hers! And she's close to London. A place that most people in the west country are convinced get superior levels of service for everything! lol
I was also reassured by them taking my high BP seriously on Monday. I'm glad all was OK, but I'm also glad they didn't just fob me off either.
I felt sorry for whoever was next due in to see the midwife though, as she was already running 15 minutes late when I went in, and I was in there for almost an hour in the end! 3 phone calls to 3 different hospital departments took some time as they couldn't decide under who's care I should be! lol
The hospital they sent us to in Bristol, was on the news yesterday for being voted best for maternity services. Not sure if that was for the county, or the country. But they were saying 'everyone does their part here. From the cleaner..(can't remember the name)... to the midwives' and OH and I were like 'Oohh, we saw that cleaner!' lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Flutter, sorry to hear about your cat. I have two cats and would be absolutely devastated if anything happens to them. I really hope when baby is here everything with them is fine as I treat them like kids!
Does anyone know if your work can force you to take all your annual leave before you start maternity leave? I plan to start maternity leave on 30th May and will take the week before it off as holidays. That will leave me 15 more days annual leave to take but I don't want to take it between now and then as my department is down to two people at the moment and it would leave my colleague in the lurch if I am off all the time. My manager also doesn't want me taking all my annual leave before May because of this. It is HR who are advising this. I would prefer to piggy back the 15 days onto the end of Maternity Leave.0 -
Toots, the letter I received from my work requested that I take all accrued holiday before the start of my maternity leave, but any holiday earned during maternity leave I could either add on to the end of my maternity leave, or just take it when I am back.
As my holiday year starts on 1 May, I will only have accrued about 2 days, so I'm probably just going to take them right before maternity leave starts.
