Do all utility companies charge extra if you can't pay by DD?

As far as I know - yes.

Even if you pay them by transfer from an Internet bank account - where they have no cost of processing at all - they still charge you extra.

Why does everone keep knocking people for trying to get their money back. No one is saying that they should not be charged a fair price for being overdrawn. But when banks are imposing charges of up to £40 this is a bit excessive. Would you pay £40 for a bag of potatoes that you know only cost £2.50 NO. The banks have made billions in profits causing many financal hardship, if they beleive they are being fair why are the paying the money back. Yes in these hard times we should all learn a lesson and live within our means. But the banks should also take some responsibility

Is a 'referral fee' as listed on your bank statement a charge that can be reclaimed?
If I reclaimed charges when it was first suggested and I did so for the previous 6 yrs can I make a claim for charges that I have incurred since my case was settled? i.e. new charges?

yes you can claim back referral fees

it won't hurt to ask for the other charges back, put it in writing and if you have a case number from previous case quote it and deal with the customer relations direct not your local branch and it will get logged whilst the case is going on. who says that by accepting previous refunds etc means you can't claim other unfair charges back but remember you need to really review your finances so this doesn't keep happening as you don't need the stress ;)
Love my job in the bank and am proud to say that, however I only do what is right for the customer no matter what, probably why I am on top of customer service nominations by my customers :A

I have spoken to someone who works at lloyds/tsb they tell me that anyone claiming their bank charges will have their bank account closed. Surely this is wrong and they cannot do that.
  • I reclaimed bank charged over a year ago and then wrote a letter closing my bank account. I have a loan and a credit card with the same bank and never miss a payment. I do internet banking to check this and my current account disappeared after the charges where reclaimed so I assumed they had closed it upon my request. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

I have recently received letters from them threatening bailiff action as they had been placing charges on the account for nearly a year without informing me in any way. Now they are demanding the money back which I can’t afford to pay. No one at the bank seems to be able to see why I was charged originally but said that there is nothing they can do until the test case is complete! <o:p></o:p>

I wouldn’t necessarily say I was in financial hardship I work full time but I have other debts that I have to pay off and can not spare any extra money<o:p></o:p>
  • Hi
My brother claimed back 6 years worth of charges from the Halifax a while ago. Recently he has gone £2 overdrawn and been charged £60 for this by the Halifax. Are these charges legal with the decision pending from the OFT from the court case ruling. Could the £60 be re-claimed?

The person you spoke to obviously hasn't read section 7.7 of the new banking code.

Did you see the question in our Q&A - What should I do if I am reclaiming charges due to a bank error, not due to the fairness of the charges?

You could contact the FOS under these grounds if your bank is not helping you.

  • I used to have a combined mortgage/bank account with Britannic Money (now Mortgage Trust). As a result of the hugely complex rules for the operation of this account I inadvertantly incurred some charges, called variously "arrears administration fee", "exceeding withdrawal facility fee", "unpaid fee", "mortgage payment not made fee".

I took it that these were "bank charges", but a letter from Mortgage Trust in response to my claim states they were "charges and fees levied on the account because of my failure to meet my contractual obligations".

I can't see these accounts mentioned in the articles about reclaiming bank charges. Have I missed something? Do you consider them to be bank charges?
