Just looked at all the links for clothes and I must say if you choose half of them you are going to look very dapper:D

Excellent choice and the very best of luck, have a fantastic evening and enjoy:)

Thank you all for your replies and I am getting the picture, Dark Chinos, nice shirt, brown brogues, but what is a "nice casual jacket" or "smart coat" please?
I am not too bothered about going and buying new because I have got to get myself a social life and so would hope to get more wear out of them than just one night!

If you're going for brogues, I'd go for dark brown ones (or black) rather than tan. They're a lot more versatile and IMO more stylish too.

    Something like these maybe?

Also, Debenhams and Marks & Spencer do a good selection for men's shirts and trousers.

If you go for a pinstripe shirt, make sure you get vertical stripes instead of horizontal. They're a lot more slimming, horizontal stripes tend to add pounds.

I hope you have a lovely time! :)

I'd go for the dark chinos and a smart shirt too. I love a man in a pair of black brogues. I'd pair them up with a single breasted jacket.

Tan shoes are very in at the moment, they go with everything.

I'm a similar age to the OP, please don't go to Marks & Spencer :)

Stick with Next or somewhere similar. M & S just shouts "I have no fashion sense but i needed something to go out in" :D

If you are looking for cheap and cheerful I was in asda today and their shirts and dressy/fitted polo shirts are very like ones I have bought my partner from next.

For men's shirts M&S is ok, but in general I agree with you, they're not really that good for women's clothes.

The thing with next is, a lot of the clothing is that slim fit cut. Ok if you're lovely and lean but I know from my husband who carries a few too many pounds, the sizing is awful in there!

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the tan shoes. They look awful with black trousers, they stand out like a sore thumb!

They do with black trousers, but black chinos look okay with tan shoes.

I am very sorry about your wife. Hope you are OK.

I can't add anything to what has been said, because some very good advice has already been given.

    Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies I do apprecaite it and to be honest I am really not looking forward to going out by myself in a social situation but I know that if I don't bite the bullet and go now I might end up spending the rest of my life sat at home by myself watching dull TV shows.
It is like when I started work, I half heartedly looked for a job and just fell on the one which I am doing now where the person who did the job before me left work with no notice and they wanted someone to start immediately so they advertised on a Thursday and I emailed my CV and went for an interview on the Friday and started on the Monday. So I had no time to worry about it. I found it really difficult after going through 5 years of hell to be suddenly in a normal environment with normal people doing normal things (working).
I must admit that in my first week I did have thoughts about just going home and forgetting about work but I knew that if I did that then I would just be giving in and I would have a miserable life and no money so I stuck at it and by weeks 2 and 3 I was looking forward to going to work!
So I am dreading the night out but I know that after an hour or two and a few beers I will be sorted and it is the right decision.
So thank you all again. I just do not want to turn up and look out of place!
