Aaww...good luck, dug - you've already come a long way, and I'm sure you'll be fine! Luckily the night out is with workmates so you already have plenty of common ground for conversation and having teenagers means you won't be entirely stuck in a 70's/80's timewarp!
Most of the fashion advice we've given points to similar styles (except for the polar extremes on M&S and tan brogues!:rotfl:)

Just go and have fun - we often go out in a big group to those nightspots which cater to our age group, and actually very little has changed since we were all young - the music is the same (with a few mainstream chart hits from more recent times), the dancing is just as dodgy, you still can't hear to chat - the main difference is that everyone's a bit chubbier and wrinklier and you'll be paying a lot more for your pint :D

    Sorry for your loss.

I'm the same age as you and my advice is wear to anything... just make sure it's in some shade of beige.

At our age, you can't go wrong with beige.

Just to say, I agree with everyone else :) Go to Next and get a darkish casual shirt, dark trousers, smart shoes and a smart coat (and new socks and pants :)).

I hate chinos personally but the club may have a dress policy so not worth chancing even smart jeans.

If you are carrying a little extra weight then definitely wear the shirt loose rather than tucking it in.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

One issue with this time of year is indoors is warm/hot and outside is cold.

    Nothing that shows sweat.

Try not to be wearing new shoes unless you have confirmed comfort for a full night.

If you know where the place is and there is another place(pub) close you could just go out for a beer and observe

You will probably be surprised by the extremes.

    Most important iron the shirt.

Have you thought about going to John Lewis, HOF or Debenhams and using their personal styling service. I've used it and although I'm a similar age to you, I found it daunting but I was pleasantly surprised.

They could help you develop a capsule wardrobe. If you're not sure what that is, it's a wardrobe of single items all of which go well together. That way you'd have several items you could mix and match.

When I went the personal styler was in her 50s and said she had men and women in, she even had a woman of 84 the previous week. I always thought these were for 20 something and I'd be out of my depth, how wrong I was.

If you do go make sure you wear your best undies though, nothing with holes in please !

I'd agree with that. I went to a Christmas do last night and the website actually said no jeans or trainers. Many chinos are cut like jeans anyway.

If you are OK with mail order, I'd suggest Lands End. They are decent value, very hard wearing and hit the right note. They take returns, if you end up getting the wrong size, but once sorted, you will be well set up with them. The staff at the end of the telephone are very helpful.

And I wouldn't wear one for the night out you describe, but for a laugh, the Old Guys Rule range (google them) are fun T shirts for the summer. They are decent quality & sensibly sized, so they do look right on "Old Guys" (who do rule!!)

And I hope you have a lovely evening - I'm sure your wife would be proud & pleased that you are going.
