It's a bit cheeky of them doing this to be honest. I'd fully expect no resort fee if I booked before it was introduced, however the happy hour is a bit of an odd one. I'm picturing us having problems with the bar staff on this one. I think they should bring back the happy hour, their bar must be empty!

I think they must be struggling financially, however they've had great rates on Travelzoo recently, so they also must be trying to get folk in. They're getting into a catch 22 here. Might see if we can get a better deal elsewhere.

I think what he meant was that it's imminent, and if it comes in soon he will make sure you get no resort fee added even if it comes in at the time you book.
The happy hour thing will work that you put everything on your room then sort it out at checkout where he will have left a note.

They are going to have a free wine reception from 4-5:30pm daily to show some value to the resort fee.

The new promotion is going to be $4 – Beers, $5 – Apps, $6 – Glasses of wine, & $7 – Cocktails but I dont know what time.

I got a really good rate for September (best I have had in years) because he says they are quite slow
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Did Derek go into that much detail about happy hour being sorted at check out? I'd worry about that.

Free wine reception 4-530 is interesting, but awfully (dangerously lol) early. The drinks promotions you listed for other drinks are interesting too. Pretty much like happy hour prices, but maybe more restricted I suppose (or a little more expensive but not too bad).

I got a quote for September a good while ago. Not sure if it's similar to your dates, it was for 4-12th. I don't know whether to email back and see if anything has changed, or just to look for something else. It seems obvious that they're looking for ways to bring in more money but those ways might just lose them customers. I am also remembering the state of the room we got last time, the shower was absolutely filthy and the phone was covered in something. I'm quite happy to decline housekeeping several days of my trip, but what I can't stand is a dirty room on arrival. Particularly disappointing as it was my 40th and we had plans that evening and didn't get into our room till quite late as it was, then had to call housekeeping before we could get a shower etc!

We've hired a car for the first time in June.

I've driven in Florida a few times, how much more difficult is it in Vegas ? I've also got a Sat Nav to ease the pain.

Lastly does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit within an hour's drive. We've only ever been 1 trip (Laughlin) before. Thanks...

Not difficult driving in Vegas at all.... Same I would say :)

As for a drive, goto Red Rock... Its not too far away, u can drive round the place which is cool and so on, but if u hired a nice nice car ;);) Then the roads outside Red Rock make the car come alive!! ;)
Ideally a V6 with at least 280bhp should do the trick for driving pleasures! :D

Valley of Fire to the North East of Las Vegas one of our favourites. When you get to the end of the scenic drive there, you have three choices. Turn around and drive back the way you came; turn left and drive through Overton on the way back, there is a nice little museum there if you like that sort of thing; turn right and drive along the side of Lake Mead towards Hoover Dam.

I got stopped for speeding last trip. Middle of the desert. I just pulled out my damp paper license and put on a High Grant type voice "dreadfully sorry" etc. and he let me go rather than spend the rest of the day processing me.

We have only been once but I agree - it's stunning. Red Rock is lovely and closer, but VoF is something else...we will make sure we have some cold drinks with us next time as there was an incident with the little shop at the visitor's centre last time, the machines were not working properly/stealing money and there was an angry mob forming and nowhere else to get drinks we could see...we resorted to some quite warm bottles of water we had in the boot, which was fine for hydration purposes, but not all that pleasant. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

What are the cheaper all-suite hotels? Hoping to go to Vegas next year and instead of a room in a 5-star hotel, I'm interested in finding a suite in a 4-star.

Also depends what you need from a Suite. Rio for example is an all suite hotel. They have a sofa and a fridge in the room. Is that what you want, or you might want a kitchen, toaster, washing machine? I think a fridge can be useful, but you can get that in your room at any hotel if you ask/pay.
