Well I have. I used to enjoy an occasional mooch around the shops but I certainty don't miss the hasle of trying to find a parking space anywhere I chose to go. The trouble is you can get rather out of touch with prices and my regular reaction now, if having to buy an article I haven't bought for a long time is an agonised exclamation of HOW MUCH?

Ha! I thought it was only me that had that surprise with prices!
    NOT BUYING IT 2018!

Consumerism is.....buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know and probably wouldn't like even if you did know them.

I'm so sick of spending money this month...have just purchased last presents online, click & collect in store so know they'll be here in time 🙏

I have a team lunch on Thursday and a dept night out on Friday, once they're done that's the spending finished until after Xmas when I have to get meat and veg for New Year's Day dinner.

I'm thinking about making January a full no spend month :D anyone else wishing it was over already??:rotfl:

Apart from food shopping and gifts, I haven't bought anything at all for nearly three months now. I don't browse round the shops (haven't enjoyed that for quite some time).). Has anyone else noticed positive knock-on effects from Not Buying It? The improved bank balance goes without saying...:)

I am really inspired reading about people extricating themselves from the lure of the shops. In the past I have always been a little smug about my shopping habits. I'm a bargain hunter, I rarely pay full price for anything. I'm not one of those 'mugs' buying the latest thing and shopping to keep up with the trends. I buy at car boot sales, charity shops, discount stores. I'm a super, savvy shopper aren't I!??
However this thread has really made me rethink how I manage my finances. Yes I'm a canny shopper but I seem to have acquired an awful lot of 'bargains' that are cluttering up my home and I neither want nor need!
So 2016 is going to see a change in the direction of material goods coming into my home. More stuff is going to go out than comes in.It's a simple equation that will hopefully keep me from unnecessary spending.
First place to start is my craft room (yes I have an entire room full of craft stuff!!). It has become a room of guilt because of all of the stuff in there that is beautifully organised but ultimately never used.
Thank you for all of the motivation provided on this thread!

  • Actually I think I joint to help me stay in budget which I have until this month. If I had not we would not have eaten.

With the unexpected eviction I have had to buy things I did not expect to buy. We are very grateful to be rehoused into a very tiny flat. It sure is expensive to move. The necessities you have to buy when you move average around £3000 a time.

We have spent about £9000 on carpets which we never had to buy when renting privately. I have had built in cookers for years everywhere we have lived so now I have had to buy a cooker which with delivery and fitting is nearly £500, The space provided for a fridge/freezer is for separate fridge and freezer so another £350.

We have yet to buy the curtain rails but I expect that will come to about £200. Thankfully we will be able to use some curtains from the last house so no curtains to buy for a little while. I have thousands of curtain hooks so hopefully I will be OK there. If anyone ever needs any send me a PM and check with me before you buy. I can easily send you some. They cost £4 - £5 for ten and I am sure they only cost a few pence to make.

chirpycheap could you use any of your craft stuff for presents. Anyone who is retired or out of work may love being given something to occupy them.

I think we may feel a new thread come on for 2016.
If this year has been the year of "Not Buying It" perhaps the theme for 2016 should be "getting Rid Of It"

I,m sure we've all got our guilty cupboards, wardrobes, garages or lofts.

I don!t know about the rest of you but I always feel liberated after I've cleared out a lot of unwanted "stuff", especially when it means you can open drawers or cupboards with ease instead of doing battle because there is so much stuff jammed in them.

A friend who volunteers in a charity shop tells me they are always overwhelmed with donations early in the New Year. I think everybody must use the Christmas break, if they have one, to have a good clear out!

I for one don't have anything to get rid of but I do need a constant reminder not to buy. There are two decluttering threads.

How about still not buying it?

Primrose Quite a lot of donations in the new year are unwanted gifts which show the folly of buying so many gifts.
  • I've got to admit I do use this thread for motivation of not buying it, where possible.

Today I have held off and held off having to shop and low and behold a 7 pound off coupon arrived today, a nice suprise as we have to buy a kettle.

I've only just discovered this thread, would love to sign up for 2016 if there's a new one!

Has anyone here read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo? I did, at the start of the year, and it's changed my life - no exaggeration.

After completing the process, my shopping habits have drastically changed - I no longer shop unless I really need something. I have no wish to bring anything into my house that doesn't 'spark joy' (the central theme of the book). My relationship with my stuff has changed - I have more respect for what I own if that makes sense??
