Has anyone made a cake in the Slowcooker before and did you use some sort of liner?

I decided to try it and I've made a ginger and mincemeat cake using a recipe designed for the oven, also used up half a jar of OOD mincemeat and the remains of the golden syrup from Jan 2014......I wasn't sure how long it would take so thought I might be lucky and have some today but it took longer than expected.....then again ginger cake is better the next day anyway!

Only problem I have is that it stuck to the sides even though I lighted oiled the sides of the pot....after some reading on inter web it seems liners are the way to go but I don't know if they're worth it as they're about £2 for 4 liners best deal I can find is 20 for £7 & free post....and whether I could use something else like cling film?

I have see cake liners in some pound shops & B&M.
  • Another long time lurker - popping my head in just to say thank you for your inspiration. Been doing a lot of `buying it` recently but only things that are needed and will be used but can`t believe how much overpriced tat is in the shops.
Have lots of odds and ends in the fridge and freezer to up too. So thanks for your ideas.

Sorry to hear that eandjsmum I hope you find somewhere.
  • Evening everyone

I think it is time that I come back on board... Have been a bit awl and fell over board. How good that I can swim....

Right at the moment my spending habits annoy me... I've been on holidays and bought quite a lot, but things I really love and didn't felt bad about it at all. But since I'm back I somehow feel very bad about my shopping I've done since, probably because everything comes at the same time... I decided that I needed two or three jumpers and a bolero recently and now parcels keep arriving as I order and then send it back and order something else as the first thing wasn't what I wanted or too big or whatever... Then I ended up with a massive yarn shopping for charity and have to find a place for it in my flat... Plus couldn't resist the temptation to buy an insanely expensive candle...

How did it got so cluttered in here? I did a lot uncluttering in summer and felt good about but now I somehow feel suffocated... I don't know how I fitted all that suff into the smaller flat before I moved two years ago...

So, rant over... I think I know what I have to do next year... Try harder to not buy so much and only buy things that make me happy. I think I will have to do yet another decluttering session after Christmas and will hopefully feel better after that.

Note to self, don't buy yarn!
  • Clutter creeps up upon you at times ,often it a case of 'Mmmm I'll keep that just in case and you end up with a house full of 'just in cases ' :)

My kitchen drawers that are in severe need of decluttering.
They are one knife/cutlery drawer which is fine, and five which are full of 'just in case' junk :) I have decided that I shall do one drawer per day and if its not been used its going to either the CS or the tip.

I know I have a couple of old cameras in one drawer that haven't seen the light of day for several years, plus god knows how many chargers for various bits and pieces.Today's drawer will be the drawer for the cookery odds and ends, lots of which just don't get used

Having got my one and only food shop yesterday :) I am going to use my odd mornings /afternoons where I'm not busy for decluttering a drawer at a time.

Hopefully they will be cleared before Christmas then I will move onto the bottom cupboards of which there 8 also seemingly full of a lot of unused stuff China/dishes plates bowls etc.

I realised yesterday that I am away for the last week on the month so only had to buy essentials that I had run out of,plus fresh fruit and veg so my food purse still has just over half my monthly budget left in there :):):):) fingers crossed I can hang on to it until the end of the month. No more food shopping needed at least.I may use the surplus to pick up some left over Christmas stuff after Christmas last year I snaffled 6 jars of mincemeat for 10p each and used them throughout the year.

I did make a big soap bar from the odds and ends of soap that were in a jam jar in my cupboard, and it has hardened off nicely in the airing cupboard As I use the same soap I now have two square blocks of Dove soap made from the scrappy bits left at the end of a bar.I hate to waste anything if I can so I now have two 'free' bars of soap :):):)Just broke the slivers up into small bits put them in a jam jar with a tiny bit of water zapped it in the microwave and poured the mush into an old soap container lid I had in the cupboard You know the sort you put your soap in your wash bag when you go away.result one oblong shaped soap bar that I cut in half and am using in the downstairs loo :):):)

:) I use one of those scratchy shower mitts but I don't wear it, I put slivers of soap inside it to finish them up and use it as a body scrubber. Not even the tiniest morsel of soap gets wasted that way.

Like Jackie0, I'm away for the last week of the month, so am aiming to run down on the fresh stuff. My little freezer has also been making a few strange noises, dunno if this is just random or the beginning of the end (have had it 9 years next month) so will treat it as a risk and run down the higher value things like the protein, just in case it dies whilst I am away.

Righty, out to face the day - see ya laters. x
