Thank you lovely people for your good wishes.I have surprised myself by being a bit of an invalid.Still a bit grotty and shaky if I try to do anything.Enjoying reading the thread, always such interesting posts.Vx
:) My friend and neighbour, SuperGran, was a nurse her whole life and a theatre sister for the last couple of decades. She always says that people who have had a general anaesthetic should expect that alone to affect them for 2-3 weeks, never mind the healing processes from the surgery. Low moods aren't at all uncommon, so don't be scared if you experience them. She gets pretty cross at how lightly GAs are treated, and that people aren't warned that the GA can be debilitating on it's own.

Have been out twice today after food (two different directions on foot, one to get the YS bargains). I have beef. And fancypants bread (originally £2.40!) reduced to 10p a loaf . Which is 6p less than I paid for the previous loaf....... I shall have some in a mo to see what made it so expensive to begin with it, I expect to find flakes of gold amongst the grains, darlings.:rotfl:

Was tempted by naughtinesses in the bakery section, such as heavily-reduced pastries etc, but my arris needs to be heavily-reduced before I should go back to having them as a very occasional treat.

Am working on a pile of library books and resting a lot today as have started the symptoms of a cold and feel less than brilliant. Gosh, raining half the day, chilly for the time of year and going down with the lurgy..... I know! There must be an imminent public holiday.

:p Could be worse - at least I'm in my comfy home and not stuck in a traffic jam somewhere.

    Evening everyone

I'm back from my holidays and I have to say that I was pretty good with what I bought...
A nice umbrella - old one is broken -, some yarn, a teacup and a butter dish and a gorgeous pink cardigan from the 50ies for 7£. Some of the yarn is from Tiger, quite good quality and only £1 for a ball, the other yarn was 2 something for a ball, so quite reasonable and will make two lovely scarfs.

Plus of course the holiday-stuff like bus tickets, museum entry, food... Though my parents have been quite generous and payed the dinner while my sister and I took it in turn to pay breakfast and lunch (sandwiches)

But have to admit that I made a very frivolous purchase. Very frivoulous and unneccessary indeed.... Well, when I left my old job last week I got some money which they said I should use to get something nice while on holiday. I decided to get something with it which I would not buy normally. Well, we went into an antique shop (where I got the cardigan) and on the very last shelf I was passing on my way to the till sat a metal Muffin the Mule puppet... I felt I just had to rescue him from that shelf and give him a home. So a quite battered little Muffin is sitting on my bookshelf now.

But now I will try to be back to being a good girl and only buy things that are on my wishlist (shoes for example, still running low on decent shoes for work...) and will also try to have an eye on my groceries shopping.

Suki, your childhood holidays sound the way holidays should be!

Jackie, I had a good laugh when I read about all the things you stuff into your car when going on holidays. We used to have a holiday cottage until a few years back and although you could think it would be easier when you can have things there permanently we never travelled light. I guess my father and grandfather had quite a job with the logistics of what fits into which car... Worst thing was that you could only use the street up to the house in dry weather so quite often it was walking the last half mile with backpacks and bags full of stuff...
My grandparents would go back home every few days to look after the garden (it was an hour par way, so quite managable) and they normally left with a load of dirty clothes and a long list of what to bring from back home from clothes to building material for our countles renovation projects...

    have a nice evening all!

I agree. They just tell you to drive and not operate machinery for a couple of days. I had several in quick succession a few years ago, and it wasn't until the 5th (or 6th?) that someone thought to mention depression as a side effect. And because I was having so much treatment, I was taking minimal time off work. Now I demand a 2-week sicknote and go back to a light schedule. Recovery is MUCH improved.

Several colleagues have had hospital treatment recently and said they'll be back at work in a few days. I kept telling my boss it wouldn't happen... he thought I was overly cautious. Guess who was right? (and one person who came back early was obviously affected and making some very poor quality decisions... I remember doing this myself :o).

    Ahoy there!!

Vulpix - when I broke my leg last summer ( and had to have 2 lots of GA - one for straightening the leg and one for putting in the plate and screw) they warned me not to go too mad AND that GA could make you feel a bit 'off'. If it was your best friend that this had happened to and felt like this - what would you say to them? What would you tell them to do?? Take it easy comes in there somewhere Im sure!! Spoil yourself a bit. As you know I ve had a few naff days recently and gave myself a 'my own best friend' talking to - I did very little the beginning of today but began to recover my GU&G (get up and go) towards the evening and started getting on with stuff! What you ve had is much more than I - be your own best friend and spoil yourself!! I dare you! Go on :j

NBI today - have just been invited down to Portsmouth for next weekend. Thought - oooh must take wine and those biscuits they like.... how can I spoil them as a thank you??? Then I thought - hang on they always liked my cakes - have ingredients - can bake - so I will!!! LOL And they liked my hummus and there's this savoury bisc recipe I want to try..... Far more thought, love and care shown than a quicker but more expensive dash to the shops!! :rotfl:

well must go to bed as have great :money: ideas 4 tomorrow! Nite all :)
Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j

:) Being your own best friend, I like that, will have to bear that in mind. I can be a bit of a one for going at life like a bull at a gate, which clashes horribly with reality when you have had ME for 30 years. Have to rein myself in sometimes or I will crash and then be wiped out for days.

I think that a lot of modern medicine is a bit overly-optimistic. Yes, there are wonderful developments like keyhole surgery, and other things, which make it possible to turn patients around at hospitals and clinics much faster than in days of yore. But we don't suddenly develop extra-fast healing powers as a species because surgical practice changes. It takes quite a bit of time to recover fully from many things, and the emotional side is something which has to be considered, too.

SuperGran has seen many tens of thousands of people through and post surgery; planned surgeries, road traffic accident victims, victims of crime. She says that when people are regaining consciousness after the GA, the emotional part of the brain activates first. 90% of people come to crying, the other 10% wake up laughing. And she has had some terrible times where someone coming out of GA has flashed back to traumas decades ago, such as POWs.

So, if you or someone you know, is having a GA, treat them gently and don't expect miracles. Just because someone is walking, talking and apparently functional, it doesn't mean that all is well with them.

Thank you Grey Queen for the interesting information on GA's. I am having one tomorrow.

:) Glad to have been of service. I was one of the 90% who came back crying and then was embarrassed to be crying! If someone had told me ahead of time that this was going to happen, it would have been a comfort.

Hope all goes well tomorrow and with your recovery.
