Thanks for the 'heads up' re Lid!l mince reductions Pm2326!! Their mince is really nice and as I 'pay' myself on a Friday - I will pop in and grab about 2 lots for freezer.
Its blowing a gale here and so the gardening did not get done but some culling of e-mails and throwing away of stuff from back of cupboard and some working (as in going to work) did get done today!

I have found a recipe in an old cookery book (during my turning out!) that I want to try. I have the ingredients and so am gonna have a go at it tomorrow - it uses little fat as it is a continental/bread/pastry type thing - it may take all day to make (yeast dough to rise!!) so I might not eat it till Thurs but once Ive tried it - if it is good I will post it! Does digging up and starting to use again an old recipe book count as NBI?? Please advise folks!

As you can tell I am here today so no bad effects from OOD marscapone!! As someone said - what a good job we have noses that work!!

I have also rooted around in me shed and found pots that I think will do for tomato plants (grown from seed now need moving on to bigger pots (forum wouldnt let me use the p**** out word - but in this context its not rude!! :rotfl: ) !! Yea NBI :D

Hope all well with you all and that frugality reigns!

I would say yes it does count as NBI as you're not spending money

    A) you've not bought a new book, you're recycling
    B) you already have all the ingredients
    C) you're replacing shop bought bread with home made

Hope it works out, we want the recipe :D

    Hi all

Haven't posted for ages but just wanted to share what I'm doing today.

We are off on holiday on Sunday and my 4 year old has never been on an aeroplane. I was thinking about buying him some magazines with free toys to entertain him, but then I thought of the good ship NBI so now I am taking the following (some of which will be in hold luggage to play with on holiday and on the way back):

We have loads of kids magazines that are untouched because he usually only wants the free gift, so I will choose some of those that have stickers still intact.
A small box of lego with free printables and a base board
Plastic animals and a laminated scene sheet.
A dry erase board and dry erase markers for drawing and practicing writing
A small calculator and some maths printables
    Paint sample colour match game
I Spy using the aeroplane in flight magazine - I spy a colour etc

I imagine he will be entertained enough just by the aeroplane itself but it can't help to have something else!

    Hope that helps someone x

    Hi Lillian

I cant claim this as original - but I too used several things! To make it more exciting you keep each thing in a paper bag and only 'release' one bag every hour - if you have an analogue watch it teaches them how to tell the time very quickly!!!

I also did finger knitting and cat's cradles with string as a change from paper-based activities. Also an ordinary card pack - getting them to match numbers by doing 'solitaire' with them.

On way home a paper book in which they can stick photos/tickets/ do drawings about their holiday (and you can do some writing for them to copy) entertains them and makes a good momento - my boys are now 28 and 31 and have kept many of these!

Hope your trip goes well! :j

    Afternoon all,

Realise Captain and fellow sailors that the ship is probably half way round the world by now, but woul love to come aboard at the next port please.

Found this forum about 3 days ago....and am on page 34 of posts. Just love it. It covers so many aspects of living a simpler lifestyle......less cluttter, less stuff, less headless chicken dances. Due to health issues my lifestyle is changing.....unable to do paid work. BUT, it has forced me to sit back and really look at things. Out of the rat race and hopefully able to waddle round the decks with like minded folk.

Had a BAD spendy day today! It's my brothers birthday, so I took us for a meal. For three of us the bill came to £80! Remind me not to offer to pay again...

I also bought some clothes at Peacocks, coming from looking at myself and seeing what an absolute state I was. Shouldn't have done it I know, but I will be going through my wardrobe and getting rid of EVERYTHING I no longer fit into. I'm tired of holding onto things thinking I will lose weight. Spent £66 in Peacocks but got some essentials and also some things for mum.

On the subject of mum, I have agreed to lend her £300 so that she can go on holiday with her brother. She doesn't earn much, and to be honest I probably won't see the money back, but some things are more important than money and one of those is her seeing her family, who live a long way away. One of her brothers had a heart attack a few months back so it's brought home to me that we are all getting older (mum is 60 next year) and there may not be that many more occasions that they can actually meet up. The following quote kinda sums it up for me.

"Because we do not know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. And yet everything happens only a certain number of times. And a very small number really."

    Brandon Lee

Anyway, it means that this month is a bit of a whitewash for me saving wise. It doesn't mean that I will be wasteful for the rest of the month, just that I won't be saving as much as I have done. As penance for the clothes shopping, I have decided that one of the tasks (either the birthday presents or the calendar) no longer deserves a treat.

    Hello and welcome agnesjr.
I bought a top yesterday and I love it,money well spent I think at £15.I also bought a nice cotton nightie from the chazza for £2 today, will save it for hospital stays!
And now for the expensive bit,car passed its MOT with some new wiper blades, hooray! Then our tenant phoned to say the boiler was leaking.Had someone out who told us it would be cheaper to use british gas as they have an offer on,very good of him,top bloke. So that could be an open cheque!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!At least we have some money because of NBI,thank goodness.Keep up the good work Vx
ps I am feeling fantastic,my belly button is still gross but I feel amazing.More energy than iv'e had for years.

Hi folks, hope you are all well. I'm 3 weeks into my new job surrounded by lots of lovely shops in a busy city centre and I feel weird .... really weird, or is it because I have changed?

The last time I worked in this area was up until the end of 2011. I was still a bit of a shopaholic and had yet to discover MSE or any of the frugal blogs that I now follow. I use to trawl certain shops all the time and be forever buying stuff. Stuff that either sat around unworn or just gathered dust in its pretty packaging.

I am just not interested - shopping is boring. I visited old haunts to test myself, came away with nothing and have not returned. I take food to work everyday as sandwiches I find are a rip off and take my own provisions for a brew. Although I am in need of new clothes (I do wear stuff until its only fit for scarecrows) this can wait for now as I hate buying clothes. I feel that something has changed and hopefully it will stay this way. The only money spent so far was in Poundworld on a couple of cans of the coty l'aimant body spray, one of which is for my mum as she adores this scent, and that's it.

I am more time poor as the commute is a bit of a pain and I'm too tired to start cooking once I get home. OH is a fussy eater and doesn't like this, that and the other so we end up with egg on toast or something light.
