My double glazed windows are now 13 years old but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the windows at all and the only problem I have is that the seals between the frame and windows has become brittle and stiff over time. I called the window company who installed and after several sharp intakes of breath and a 'ooohhhh, that's not something we can arrange over the phone, we need to visit to make sure they can be replaced and we charge £45 call out charge' I managed to get them to give me a verbal idea of how much it would cost and they said £280, including call out.........well, I nearly fell off my chair but thought, they need doing so I will have to start saving for it. Fast forward to yesterday and after spending several days researching it, opening the windows, checking the rubber seal to see if they are easily removed (neighbours must think I have lost the plot), I have bought replacement window seal for the pincely sum of £38 including postage! :j
Hi Moments of sanity
What a brilliant idea!! Well done you!!
Would you mind telling me where you got the new seals from? You have given us a brilliant idea. We have 2 windows that are a bit draughty so hopefully will be able to do as you have done.
Thank you so much!!
Hope everyone is having a good day. Sunshine and lots of sleet/snow showers here. Still we have cut up lots of wood for the stoves in between the showers. So now have enough for another week we hope.

Hi Edwink,
It's called Stormguard UPVC replacement window and door seal 20mtrs. Screwfix sell it for £16.40 but as I wanted 60mtrs (going to do all windows and front and back door), I ordered from Sealco-Scotland.co.uk, they sell it for £10.98 for 20 Mtrs but have a delivery cost of £5.99.
If you have problems finding it, let me know and I will pm you the links to the pages.0 -
NBI working well today, no spending even though I have been out and about. Parked a few minutes walk away from my appointment so no parking costs.
Did a little mending this afternoon and checked out the pinterest boards for Easter craft ideas.

Would you mind letting us know how you get on with this product, ie is it as easy as they say to install?
I've noticed this winter that whenever there's strong winds I get a whistling noise from my bedroom window (annoying when you need to sleep) and back door. I automatically assumed that they must have moved slightly in their frames, you've now got me thinking it could be the seals...need to do some investigating at the weekend!0 -
Well I was really happy at cutting the cost of the house insurance in less than half last week (for better cover!) and so I phoned our gas/elec supplier yesterday to see if we were on the cheapest tariff. We've stuck to the same one for electric, but we've switched to a capped tariff for gas, estimated to save £130 over the next year :T Our payments are already only £45 a month so really pleased again with that. With the saved money we've booked a weekend away for our wedding anniversary in May
I've had a medical procedure this afternoon which has left me feeling a bit sorry for myself so it's nice to have a night away to look forward to0 -

I will certainly let you and Edwink know how easy/difficult it is to do, I am planning on doing it myself rather than getting DH to do it as he works long hours.....it may turn into a 'blue' job though if I can't do it
It was the wind whisteling through my living room window that make me look at the seals and they do seem very brittle and almost moulded into position so I am really hoping this is the problem as I certainly can't afford new double glazing
I have developed a new strategy for not popping into the shops when I have to pick my youngest DD up from friends.....I go out in my PJ's! :rotfl: There is a small Tesc0's at the end of the road where I collect her and I quite often pop in and get a bar of chocolate or a bag of crisps on my way to her, so for the last week, I haven't got dressed when collecting her and can't pop in as the shame would be too much! :rotfl:0 -

Joss sticks or smudge sticks (I make my own sage ones and dry them out over the summer months) are great for tracking down where draughts are entering. The slightest breeze moves the smoke stream.
It's amazing how much heat is saved by sealing the draughts - but then again the change of air they bring is good for usAiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

Just had someone round about energy saving/insulation - new funding out in April which may well bring more people in scope (e.g. newer houses) and apparently will also include draught-proofing, so keep an eye out...0
