When my OH shops alone, he insists on going up and down every aisle in case he sees something interesting which is worth trying. I can't tell you how many times this has resulted in extra items being loaded into the trolley.[/QUOTE]
Yep, my husband does the same and even worse goes hunting for the reduced price section, which he then can't resist. I have a list, but now I just ask him if he'd like to sit in the car and read a book while I get the few things we need. I'm not against reduced price stuff if I can use it, but it's just an annoyance at the moment as it means I'll never get to the bottom of my industrial sized freezer. It's going to take me months to eat my way through it.
In a way I'm making it even worse by being the frugalist cook I can be and trying not to waste resources. This morning I made a clementine crumble (hanging around since Xmas), but since they were organic I sliced up the peel very thinly and mixed it into a cake. Lovely orange flavoured cake, but of course I made extra for the freezer to use up all the peel.GC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£2400 -

AnimalTribe. - heaven help us if ever our two husbands went shopping together, we would never reach the bottom of our store cupboards or freezers!
We will be making marmalade soon so will be saving the orange peel from fruit in the fruit bowl in a bag in the fridge until then to chop up and add to the marmalade. For those who like a really fruity marmalade with lots extra peel, this is a good way of ensuring it. lemon peel can be added in the same way but don't add lime peel as it goes rock hard in cooking. Everybody goes for the marmalade peel first in this house so this ensures there's a little more of it to go round!0 -

My local bookshop exchanges books for a credit note to be spent in their shop. I've managed to get rid of a few books and have used the credit for a few used books that I wanted. They have been fairly generous with their purchase price. Of course they don't have the range that online bookshops do, but so far I've done well. I've heard of bookshops around the country doing this, so it might be worth asking any nearby. Of course you don't get actual cash to spend, but if you love books it's worth a try.GC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£2400 -
Thank you all for your posts on workbased stress.
I am currently on the hamster wheel of a job and having worked myself into the ground now realise its got to stop. I realise I have nothing left and it feels like I am now old and out of style, They do not appear to want loyal hardworking individuals anymore . Its now affecting my home life and I appear to have given up all my hobbies and interests due to exhaustion of the job. For all the hard work no one actually thinks better of me and its never enough I have now crashed and burned and realised I have to put together an exit strategy and leave. Joining this good ship has been the first step and further advice on planning and surviving until I can put the notice in will be much appreciated.
I just wanted to say that I too used to be stressed out by work. given all the difficult jobs because I could do them, but not really appreciated especially financially. As you can see from lots of others on this thread you are not alone and some of us have managed to escape. Think about going to your GP and seeing if they can help. Mine was really good and gave me enough space to work on an exit plan.GC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£2400 -

OMG there are 2 of them in the world.;).
Ah, so it wasn't my fault my lime marmalade didn't work properly. I stuck it under a cake and forced my family to eat it with custard - they liked it though.GC Feb 25 - £225.54/£250 Mar £218.63/£2400 -
Morning all,
Antenatal appt went well this morning which was good.
Luckily at a local hospital with free parking too.
Had a toasted tea cake and cup of tea when I got back to mums and my mum in law paid us back a 4pt carton of milk to replace one they'd borrowed.
Decided to be proactive and try and do one thing each day to improve the budget.
Decided to switch my current account to halifax. I only have the child benefit/tax credits paid into it and I have DDs for my mobile and a professional membership. So I am hoping this and a transfer in/out during the month will qualify me.
I should earn £40 quidco cashback & £100 halifax cashback for switching plus £5 a month. (My existing current account is a no fee but no interest acc). This will all go towards our current savings goal - the emergency fund!
Let's hope the switch all goes ok :-)
IWAB x2024 - happy, healthy, quality over quantity, buy nothing new (and 2nd hand only if NEEDED), mindful spending, nurturing myself and family, living for now.
Mortgage @ 31/12/23 £248k - too high, interest rate gone up - want this down asap!
Debt @ 31/12/23 £16k - no interest - will clear over 5 years hopefully.
Emergency savings £4k - been ransacked over last year - needs attention :-(0 -
Did shopping this morning, and each week, I normally buy each of us a little something for the weekend (no sniggering at the back!)
A bar of chocolate or bag of sweeties each, and a couple of packs of biscuits - looking back on old receipts this can cost approx £5 per week, then add the bottle of wine for making it through another week (£5) and a couple of bottles of real ale for DH (£5) in a 5week month thats £75 or £900 a year  just on carp......
Today, I bought 4 bars of basic chocolate (35p ea) and made 48 chocolate chip cookies and 6 big bars of fudge - even adding up the other ingredients, this cannot come anywhere near £75 a month.
As for booze, I have a wine making kit in the loft with enough stuff to make 60 bottles:cool: I just havn,t got round to itIt was a Tisco,s bargin at £16 so will cost pence per bottle
So I have sat myself down and told myself that I am not allowed to buy wine till I have made the homebrew (Hmm does thatmake me sound wine dependent)Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!
£300/£1300 -
Definitely got to stop spending now, I'm just about to resign from my job, not something I had planned to do but I can't physically do the job anymore, and have been signed of for a few weeks now. I've applied for ESA and hope to get that soon, and once the doctor says my back is ok to work again I'll be applying for jobs, hopefully something that wont make my back worse.0

Gosh! What a lot of people struggling with work. And a lot of people brave enough to change it! We may need to rename the ship at this rate!!

Someone posted this on another thread, interesting
I used to make wine from kits from the art of brewing site, worked out at around £1 for a 750ml bottle, was fine, didn't have any wine disasters.
You pay for the kit but once that's paid for you are good to go and you can brew spirits and ciders/beers/ales as well.0
