"reasonably available on the premises" is the legal wording; that clearly would exclude airplanes who have no ready supply of potable water.

As I've already said, aircraft do have potable water in the tanks. This is the same water that's used for the beverage makers/hot water.

I'm thinking if you are too tight to spend a couple of quid on water, maybe you can't afford a holiday?
  • I am happy to pay for a holiday but £2 for a 35p bottle of water is profiteering to far and has gone over the limit I find is taking the mickey. It is not can't afford to pay it is I am not paying that

so just have a diet coke or something?

The point is, £2 is an acceptable price for a bottle of drink on an aeroplane. Or you could nip to Boots at Duty Free and buy a drink to take.

I just think starting a holiday moaning about the price of water when you have just given the government a heap of air passenger duty for a plane that was going to take off anyway is a not a great start.

After more than 3,000 posts you don't seem to get MSE ;)

Just because you have to spend money on stuff like APD doesn't mean you should waste it on other things. As others have said you can usually get free potable water on a plane, or else you can take an empty water bottle and fill it at a fountain airside once through security. Likely to be less bacteria than in bottled water:

Or, maybe the reason I am able to afford a holiday is because I'm "too tight" to spend a couple of quid on water?

People are often in awe (yes, awe!) at how much travel I manage to do on such a tiny income. Not doing things like paying £2 for a bottle of water is exactly how I do it!

Yup, and I'm "too tight" to pay my bank's exchange rate markup, or to pay a travel agent, or to pay rip-off roaming rates, or to pay extra for superficial fluff like posh hotels or flight upgrades. Or to pay for stuff I can get free like water.

OTOH I hear some people are so tight that they only go on holiday once a year
  • I never have a problem with airline water because all I ever drink is gin and tonic.
    And wine with the meal.
And Johnny Walker Red Label and Ginger Ale afterwards.
For some reason my flight always seems to go faster than those sticking to water.:D
  • I take an empty bottle and fill it up Airside.
2.50 for a bottle of water is daylight robbery. I will not participate in a capitalist's wet dream.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Taking an empty plastic bottle through security is absolutely fine.
After going through, I politely ask a restaurant to fill the bottle up with cold tap water. Never had a problem.

There used to be a drinking fountains in many airports near the entrance to the toilets but they've all seem to have disappeared. Wonder why??
