I was 26 when i moved out renting, 6 months later i bought a place, when i was 29 i moved back! but this time i bought the place from my folks so not quite the same as the parental home! still here 8 years later!0

I moved out into a rented flat with my 19 month old daughter, at the age of 18!0

I am 22 and still living at home. I work full time but there is no way I could afford to move out for a while.0

I was older than many on here, as I was 28. Having started the process to buy my own house when I was 27.
Mortgages were cheaper than renting when I was younger, but I didn't earn enough to buy a place of my own. With no serious boyfriend in my life to buy a property with, I had to wait until I was older and had climbed the career ladder a bit. This wasn't unusual where I live.
I notice a lot of people class themselves as 'leaving home' aged 18 when they went to Uni, even if they returned in the holidays. Whereas I consider Niece who went to Uni aged 18, only moving out of her parents house aged 22 when she finished her education.0 -
Hi, Just an advice in moving out from your parental home. In my view, you have to be ready emotionally and financially before living on your own. Be reminded that you will be responsible in everything and working independently upon settling for that matter:)0

I definitely moved out at 18 as i never went back (even during holidays) :rotfl:, unlike my sister who went back at 21 and has now at 22 moved to a flatshare in london.I was older than many on here, as I was 28. Having started the process to buy my own house when I was 27.

Albeit i live in a houseshare myself and am no where close to ever owning my own place or renting my own place, but it works for me. I could never live at home again. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Moved back after University for about 9 months then went into rented accomodation for a few years. Lost my job, had a hard time finding a new one so moved back home. Stayed for a year and a bit while i found a stable job, saved a load of dough (I paid my folks something like £100pcm for food etc...VERY good deal for which I am eternally grateful) and was able to take out a mortgage on a flat of my own aged 29.0

I came back from uni to my home city aged 21 but didn't live with my parents. I then moved back with them for a year aged 23 to save money and bought a house a year later, so was fully gone at 24.Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0

18 for uni, then back for a couple of years, then more uni, then back from aged 27-30 and then bought a flat with OH. Five years later both OH and I moved back in for four months while we bought a bigger house. My mum was on her own all through this time and it was a bit like living with a flat mate rather than your mum, we rubbed along pretty well and didn't get in each other's way. While I was there I paid a proper rent and did half the housework, she was working too so it was only fair. Neither of us saw the point of me struggling along in a shabby overpriced rented flat trying to save up a deposit while she had two bedrooms sitting empty.
It would have been different if I hadn't got on with my mum of course, or if she was still trying to treat me like a 12 year old. And the mortgage rates were ~16% back then, eek, it was an expensive time to buy!Val.0 -
I think that's a different scenario though, if you never had to return to parents home in between term dates. Amongst my own peer group, you could claim housing benefit and dole (job seekers) during the summer term whilst at Uni, so someone of my age could have def left for Uni and never been obliged to return home. I'm pretty sure you're a lot younger though, so this wouldn't have been your reasons.xXMessedUpXx wrote: »I definitely moved out at 18 as i never went back (even during holidays) :rotfl:, unlike my sister who went back at 21 and has now at 22 moved to a flatshare in london.

Niece went to 1 city at 18 for her degree and then another aged 21 for her PGCE, she remains in the 2nd city in a teaching job but I only think of her as having 'left home' when she moved into a flatshare just as she was about to commence her employment and no longer had to return to her parents when term ended.0
