By this logic people who exist on benefits never really move out!

22 or so i think and only because they sold the house and retired to north wales to get rid of me (only moved back closer once there were grandchildren lol)....although in fairness they did give me £2.5K which was my deposit for my first house and it probably was time that I stood on my own 2 feet (which was a lot easier in 1997 than it is today).
  • Left when I was 16. My sister is still there at age 24. I keep reminding her she needs to move out as half the house is mine when our parents pop their cloggs and I've already worked out she wouldn't afford to buy me out.

Parents were complete !!! h's when I lived at home, but now they come to me for advice and to get things done in their life. Moving out did role reverse. Except my father who never took a risk in life is drinking himself into a hole bitterly jealous that I have done so well in the world on my own. Personally I'd be a proud parent if I was him but heh ho.

Are you me?? Parents were not the best when i lived there now they rely on me for advice and help, even helped them financially before i found myself up the sh***er myself!! He is very jealous i am a boss of a squad, earning very good money especially for my age, bought a house(they are in council, not that im putting anyone down thats in council accomodation) got a 2 year old vehicle and hes struggling to keep his one on the road. You would think he would be proud but he seems pi**ed off im in a better postion all round than he is despite him working 20+ years longer than me. Ahwell, cant please everyone.

  • I agree but if students weren't given huge loans they wouldn't be moving anywhere at 18.

If you gave thousands to an 18 year old worker they would probably move out too but the difference is they have to earn the money before they spend it

I was the last year before fees came in but only in my last year did I have a student loan, I instead had this thing called a job which gave me money that I saved from when I started at 15 and continued working through out my time at uni too. Money was terrible, rented a rooms in fairly poor state in rough areas but didnt have to rely on anyone else.

Yes it would have been fantastic to have my own place, to own rather than rent, to "maintain my social standing" but that was no way going to be achievable on a salary that was about the NMW when it was introduced. It was more important to me to be self reliant even if its in a bit of a hole rather than only agreeing to move out when I can afford a nice place and a 24" TV etc (those were the days when 24" was a fairly big screen rather than 55")
