I have 2 Dysons, the upright I have had for 12 years, its brilliant, you must wash the filters regularly. I do mine once a month. I have it serviced every 2 years by Dyson, it has never let me down.
4 years ago I bought the little hand held battery cleaner for the car and caravan, I use it to clean the stairs and keep the kitchen mats and floor clean in between the weekly clean.
I have had numerous different vacuum cleaners in my time, the Dyson is the best. Yes it is heavy but it does what I ask of it, I am always amazed at the muck it sucks up.0 -
We have a large bungalow, long haired cats and two Dyson animals. They are fantastic and knock spots off anything else IMO.0

I can't understand how so many of you are saying how wonderful the suction on the Dyson is and how much it picks up. As I have only ever had pretty cheap hoovers (usually pay about £50 for one on ebay) I was expecting the first time I used the Dyson to be amazed at how my carpet came up and the amount of dust/dirt/dog and cat hair in the cylinder but I wasn't. As I said, it had been used ONCE when I got it and yet it didn't pick up that much and my carpet looks no different to how it did before. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0

Are you sure you didn't forget to take a seal or something off? It is possible you have something not connected correctly?
I can only speak for my own model, we have a cat & a child, our carpets were new when we moved in but after 2 years with other vacuums were looking dire, the first run round with the dyson brought them up like new. Maybe speak to dyson customer support, you could have just got a duff one off the conveyer belt.I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

I have two elderly Dysons; a cylinder and an upright. They are both very good as far as suction goes, regularly cleaned out and filters washed. I will keep them for as long as they continue to do the job in our rural home, with muck and animals to contend with.
Perhaps, Catkin, it is something to do with the model of Dyson?
I have been passed two newer upright models from other people in recent years. Having excitedly consigned my old ones to the garage and tried using the new ones, I was very disappointed! They just didn't seem to pick up at all, despite all the usual maintenance being done. My old trusty ones are now back in the hall cupboard and the others went off to the recycling centre.
It does seem that Dyson performance is very variable!0 -
Mine is a newer model & actually pulled the glued down lino off the downstairs loo floor.

When mine eventually fails then (must be 12 years old) I will definitely be going for this one!:)
The ones that I was referring to in my post above were both upright vacuum cleaners so I will go back and clarify this. The variable performance is certainly a mystery isn't it?0 -
I think the only problems with Dyson's are the owners who are too lazy to wash the filters.
I bought mine "Loss of Suction" of ebay. The seller had bought a new one to replace it. They asked why I bought it, I said to save the cost of a new one, all I had to do was wash the filters and it would be as good as new.
I think I was speaking Chinese or something to them :S0 -

Certainly not the case with mine as it was used once before I got it and the cylinder was sparkling clean.
Surely with any bagless hoovers the filters have to be washed? I have had loads of different makes and always regularly washed the filters. I think some of the manufacturers say they should not be washed but with 2 dogs and a cat I have no choice but to wash them to get the mud/hair etc offThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0
