Why do some many people love Dysons?

What am I missing with Dyson hoovers? I used one years ago when I did some cleaning for someone and I absolutely hated it.


I am now using one my mum bought and only used once because she too hated it. As my hoover had broken and I have 2 dogs and a cat I can't be without one so my mum lent me the Dyson (she intends selling it). I said if I liked it I would buy it off her even though it cost something ridiculous like £200 and I would never normally pay anything like that for a hoover.


Anyway today is the third day I have used it and it is driving me mad. I don't like the feel of it as you push it, I don't like where the on/off switch is (just seems such a silly place to put it), even tilting the handle seems a faff.


The worse thing by far though is when you want to use the pipe. How stupid that it is in the handle so the whole handle has to come off and then the pipe seems hard to hold because of the big handle and to move the actual body of the hoover you have to bend to use the handle on top of the dust canister.


It doesn't even pick up any better than hoovers that I have paid £30 for! So, just what is the attraction of a Dyson?

I don't know. When I took my old Vax to the tip a few years ago a lady working there said that the vacuums they get dumped there the most are Dysons. I used one once and didn't know what the buttons were for, and ended up pressing a button which emptied the whole thing on to my feet!

I've got a Sebo which wasn't cheap, but I've had it for years now and it's really good. I had a Vax before that which was rubbish. I'd never have a bagless one again.

I like my Dyson but, it isn't a Hoover. A Dyson is a Dyson and a Hoover is a Hoover. Sorry to be pedantic. I am not sure I would buy an upright cleaner again, much prefer the long hose with an attachment on the end. The upright Dyson is clumsy when cleaning the stair carpet, apart from that it's fine for the rest of the house. Picks up my cat hairs ok.

I'm very happy with my Dyson Animal - I'm a host for a dog-sitting service, so I get lots of dog hair, of all types, from the coarse Border Terrier hair to the cotton-wool fluff shed by a long-haired Border Collie, and it picks it all up brilliantly.

I've tried cylinder vacuums in the past, and much prefer an upright, as it doesn't hurt my back anything like as much as using a cylinder type. That said, I live in a bungalow, so stairs aren't an issue.

When our ancient and venerable Dyson went to the great lounge carpet in the sky:D we didn't even consider any other make.

I object strongly to shelling out for vacuum bags, so would always have bagless.

Just my two-pennyworth - it's horses for courses, as with so many things in life.:o

I had a dyson once as well and hated it, it was an overpriced piece of rubbish
I now have a Henry and love it.

Bought a Dyson in 2010 thinking it would be perfect for vacuuming up after 2 border collies and 2 cats......I lasted about 6 months before I gave up. It was rubbish at picking up and no where near as good at the Bissell I have now.

The first couple we had were great, lasted several years with heavy usage and their guarantee was great too.

The last two we've bought, and I regret buying the last one, have been heavy and awkward to use, and also ridiculously noisy. The latest is the worst, you can't get the nozzle out of it without it falling over and when you do you can't angle it anywhere of use.


We have a 'henry' in the office and while it has certainly lasted and is fine for an office I can't see it would cope with pets and associated mess at home.

I have a Dyson Animal and love it but it is very heavy and cumbersome to drag up and down stairs, let alone clean the actual stairs. What I really, really loved and would willingly have again if they still existed was a Hoover Junior with a permanent cloth dust collection bag that you just emptied and the hoover was light enough to use it to clean the stairs, not the attachments. Good little work horse it was too!

We bought a Dyson and I hated it so much, within a Month I bought a George (step up from a Henry) and would NEVER entertain a Dyson again.

We considered Dyson years ago, as a replacement for an Electrolux I think. They just seemed so noisy. Had a couple of Miele cylinders since then and find them quiet-ish, light and efficient. Might be a bit dearer than some makes maybe.

I love my dyson, (ball animal) it picks up cat hair from the hearth rug better than any other vacuum, and takes fewer passes to do a thorough job. Prior to my dyson, Electrolux used to be a reliable choice, but not sure now. Either way it has outlasted the previous two and is easier to clean and maintain.
