All of you saying that the Dyson doesn't pick up any more than other vacuum cleaners, when did you last change or wash your filters? I have a DC07, and the suction is incredible if we wash the filter every two months of so.

I have one of the 07s & it is brilliant.
I wash my filters twice a year & it's as good as new.

mine's an upright, I wash the filters, I use the tools, which I don't find awkward, and the suction is amazing, far and away better than the Henry and much better than any of my mother's 4 vacuums.

surely the things like positioning of the button is just about getting used to it? Other vacuums i have used have things in different places and take a bit of getting used to, as does their handling action/manoeuvrability.

btw I would love a smeg fridge - entirely because of what they look like! however when it comes to a hoover all I want is for it to make the task of hoovering as quick and painless as possible and to be easy to put away.

That's a very good point; you have to follow the instructions re washing the filters, or you can't expect it to perform well. I have a reminder set in my PDA so that I wash the filters at the recommended time, and I'm amazed how much dirt the vacuum picks up.

I don't have any issue with accidentally pressing the "empty" button, it's not really all that close to the on/off button. Maybe I have a different model? I can't remember offhand which Animal number ours is, but we went for a slightly smaller one (bad back + tiny bungalow);) so it's probably a lot lighter than the ones people are saying are heavy and cumbersome.:o

It's a DC33. The on/off button is just slightly above the button to empty the canister which is, in my view, a really stupid place to put it. Then again I think just about everything about it is stupid from the handle having to be pulled out to become part of the pipe which is then bulky, cumbersome and too long and not at all flexible to use to the ridiculous price it cost

I have looked at the reviews on Amazon and it seems that maybe some of the earlier models were better. Quite a lot of people complain about the handle/hose

  • Dyson never top in Which trials, I bought a Bosch as it was good value in the same trial but the bags are expensive, then found John Lewis model had Bosch bags made for them a lot cheaper, last week went to John Lewis to get some only to be told not being made now as all Bosch have gone bagless. Not sure if this is true as found some Bosch bags in Fenwicks
  • We had these bagless vaccumns over the years but they were all rubbish... Fidley, covered in dust when emptying, needing to empty it after every use because they do lose suction, having to wash the filters, blockages, falling over when using the hose, bits breaking off. I, like many others fell for the bullsh1t of Mr Dyson, one clever guy commercially.
I wish someone had told me 10 years ago to buy a Henry,it has been superb and faultless over the last 4 years and at around £100 has got to be the ultimate OSMSE vaccumns.
  • I have never bought a vaccuum cleaner.. have always been given castoffs..it's now a task for the january sales

I was given one from family with my first rental home and ever since then when someone upgrades their vaccuum i have inherited the older one.

My Dad is a big dyson fan and also likes 'new shiny products' so i have had so far 3 dysons off him and a couple of 'mums' choice because obviously living in a small flat you need two cleaners?.. i have even sold or charity shopped the dyson/cleaner i had before a new donated oen arrived.

I have always found dysons great for cleaning but heavy and oh so noisy.

When my hubby moved in he came with a henry.. this is by far my favourite of all the hoovers.. so much lighter as you didnt have to push all the workings around, hose already uncoiled for corners etc and easier to hide in teh wardrobe when not needed.

Sadly my carer hoovered the wet bathroom floor with it.. henry wasn't impressed and stopped working after some interesting smells, noises and sparks.

My criteria next time round.. are size, weight and noise and obviously a good clean.
  • I jumped on the dyson bandwagon years ago not great suction but I lived on my own and didn't make much mess so it did ok.... Needed to be repaired a few times and I can't fault customer service team. Ended up in the local dump .... It was dyson heaven .... Hundreds of them!! 2 years ago I got the wireless handheld as I wanted a handy vac for the kitchen.... I Have had 5 chargers sent to me and a new body section .... The 2 year warranty has now expired and it is utterly useless. I'm putting Henry on my list for Santa as I've heard great things about them! Fingers crossed!

LOL - really is horses for courses isn't it? - I have a dyson and a henry and never use the henry as using a cylinder vacuum in my house is much more of a faff than an upright - the suction doesn't match the dyson either, but it's an old cast-off from my exMIL who was annoyed with it so perhaps it was just not a very good unit.

so to the OP - as with everything, people prefer different things!

  • I already have a pathetic cylinder and a powerful upright Hoover but I am considering buying a cordless rechargeable Animal. My daughter has one and it looks pretty nifty. I have wooden/marble floors on ground floor but carpeted stairs and bedrooms and I thought it would be light and easy for all areas. I hate having a cord and would never clean the entire house all at once - heaven forbid. Does anyone have an Animal and could comment?
