I can't believe it's still so early in the month, I keep having to stop myself getting too excited about my bank balance as I've still got most of the months expenses to go out ha ha

I have however had some expenses payments clear from work so they've gone into the pot. Not sure why my salary gets paid BACS but the expenses get paid by cheque. But at least it's cleared.

I'm flirting with the idea of getting a second job, just to bump up the salary until Xmas. I don't know if I'm just too lazy though. I always used to do shifts in the local pub but that was a holiday resort so they took on flexible staff. Not sure I have quite the same options not anyway. Also the tips were good back then...

I like the statement that you have under your quote. "I trying to remember to pay my future self first". It is a good way to think about savings.

Placed £700 into long term and medium term savings plus another £465 into short term savings that I don't count ( clothes, birthdays, Christmas, car repairs etc).

  • I cannot believe how much we have spent this month. It has easily been the most expensive month of the year.

We spent two weeks in Crete at the beginning of this month with my sister and brother in law at a very expensive 5 star hotel. OH says before we went, Half board is good enough as we don't drink much so don't need to go all inclusive. Fast forward two weeks and a horrendous bar bill from cocktails, a la carte dinners etc etc and he says we should have gone all inclusive :rotfl:

We don't get paid until Friday but this month we have spent £1280 in Crete and our dishwasher broke yesterday so I have just ordered a new one for £400! £680 has been gifted to our daughters, £500 to one for passing her Phd so we gave her some money to help with redecorating her new house and the other daughter is having a baby in October so we bought some gifts for the baby and money for the pram. We have also paid a £240 deposit for a week in Centre Parcs in next June for the whole family so altogether £2600 this month in unusual expenditure. Luckily my reserve fund at the end of August was £2500 so that has all gone :(

I have however also paid £500 into my Nationwide regular saver and £250 into the Vanguard LS 60 so saved at least £750 even if the current account reserve for this year has all gone. It was saved though for large items like furniture and holidays so has at least been spent on budgeted items.

It's not a competition, just here to help motivate people to challenge themselves to save more. Some here will have large incomes but there quite a few on smaller incomes, pensions and even students!

The first thing to do is work out a budget and see what might be possible to save, then challenge yourself by aiming for say 10% more. If there's one thing to take from this thread its that any amount saved is a good amount and it soon adds up!
