Does the data usage meter update in real time, a few hours later, or overnight?

Within minutes from what I've noticed.

If it says 3G then you are on 3G. Have you checked you are in a 4G capable area?

Rechecked. Looks like I need to be outside to get 4G.

It's a bit cold to try it now. _pale_

I'll go stand by a window. Nope no 4G.

I went outside and walked up and down the road. No 4G.

    Get 4G at SC

Wouldn't it be better if you just wait until the sim arrives, and follow what is being discussed once you actually have the sim?
Well my application was never processed so I did it again and the card only arrived today.I've completed the gruelling 25 minute EE account set-up (nobody has said anything about this, or that you need to have the new SIM in a phone at the time of applying).
I haven't topped up yet because on the screen it states
'Your £10 Everything Pack will start as soon as you call, text or browse'
But my phone used 26KB off the new SIM before I could turn off data, so doesn't that mean that if I pay £5 it will not buy a £5 top-up until this (now activated?) £10 Everything Pack has been paid for?

You don't, I put the sim into an old Nokia 6100 2G phone to get the code to register.

Perhaps you should have switched off mobile data or been connected to wifi if you didn't want to use mobile data, they do give an introductory 50MB allowamce to all SIM cards, so the usage shouldn't really matter.

    No.

I don't have wi-fi and couldn't turn off mobile data or even access mobile settings because they were 'greyed out'....due to having no SIM in the phone! The SIM I usually use in it was being used in a dongle through which I was at a critical stage in that account application process.
IDK this because I've never tried to access mobile settings without a SIM in the phone :)

I was wondering where that 26KB might otherwise have come from (what with me being an intelligent, thinking person :))
I won't jeopardize things by using that up before I top up, will I?

Just remember, if you don't want the £10 preloaded pack, DONT top up £10, only top up £5 initially and load a £1 pack instead. You can then either text 'STOP PACK' to 150 or use the MyEE application to cancel any future packs.

I absorbed that from earlier in the thread (although you could be forgiven for wondering if I had :))
Before topping up I'm going to use the 50MB by tethering, just to check the SIM doesn't get 'almost immediately blacklisted' as reported by Dream9 in #52.
