Its what you do with ingredients that counts most. I'd far rather eat a homemade tomato sauce with value tomatoes and some garlic and herbs from the garden than a ready made, branded jar of dolmio. A whole lot better for your body too.

    That's a good point.

Very often cheaper brands contain less of things like fat (double cream, butter) and just less added muck in general. Try reading the label of a branded product next to a comparable value brand one day. You'll be amazed.

And that's another very valid point. If you look at the label for a pot of Golden Shred marmalade you'd find it has exactly the same fruit content as the Tesco Value equivalent at four times the price. The standard Tesco own brand marmalade is step up in quality terms from both.

I used to work in a sweet factory, we made all the sweets the exact same way, wrapped them or decorated them the same, most went into yellow and clear bags with red writing proudly displaying 'halfpounders' or 'sixouncers' 99p (price has went up to around £1.39 now) then we would have 'the tesco' order... pain in the beeeeep! The bags where square shaped, kept jamming in the machine , not sealing properly, they only had abt 175g in each bag, no matter what the sweet was... tesco sold them for nearly £3!
Tesco didn't sell our yellow bags, and the ones they do sell are branded as tesco.

I've always used non commercially marketed brands , with the ethos of buy it once to try, if I don't like then haven't lost out much.
I do compare ingredients more than I do prices, tesco stripey tin of tomatoes only has 3 ingredients, compared to the 4/5/6+ in other brands, and I'd rather pay to keep the chemicals out of my food, thankfully, a lot of the food I buy doesn't have many ingredients.

I must confess - I haven't read this thread through completely, and this may be slightly off topic, but does anyone remember kwik-save 'no frills'?

    Hi

Yes. That was during my youth and well before I became OS. I remember the fruit didn't look much good.

I am a complete supermarket tart now. I didn't used to be but after seeing the savings by buying mainly budget / value brands I am converted and check prices regularly.

I am not worried in the slightest what others might think. There's more money in my bank account as a result!
  • I buy a mixture, i have tried & tested various items over the years and some I find ok to eat and others I don't.

I have to confess we won't buy anything other than Coke or Pepsi, Napolina tinned tomatoes or decent binbags. I also won't buy cheap washing up liquid (normal tesco one is fine but not value or from the poundshop as I find it doesnt last as well).

Tesco rice and porridge are good ones, also cheap bread is fine for toast!

Oh but I tried Coop value teabags once - gross!! I won't make that mistake again!

:) I used to work in a meat-packing factory. They produced under their own name and packed for all the major and minor supermarkets and funny little off-cuts were bagged for schools and prisons (yes, that pairing made me smile, too).

Anyway, most of the time it was exactly the chunk of meat was smacked into the slicer at the top of the line and all that was changing was the "top web" - the printed polythene roll which had the retailers name and all the guff onto it. Oh, and the prices which got printed on it.

OK, the specification for Marks and Spencer orders was a bit higher, but what would get a rejection from M & S was so trivial that the consumer would struggle to notice it.

I suspect that most products are identical or nearly so, under the wrapper, so we might as well be "tarts" and experiment with shops and brands.

ETA; agree with the poster above about cheap washing up liquids; that Easy brand is utterly useless. But I get Cussons Morning Fresh brand at 2 x 450 ml bottles for £1 from the poundstores and the quality is excellent. It is also widely available in 750 ml bottles for about 79-89p.

I refuse to buy cheap binbags for the kitchen bin. I used to figure that as they were only going to be thrown away it didn't matter if they were cheap. It only takes on bursting over your feet and the floor to change that!
