I buy brands mostly because i believe they are better and i am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. i dont want to scrimp and save on food either.
I often find that people who scrimp on food might smoke or drink or gamble and to me thats not important but having nice meals is important. It makes you feel good giving your body nice food.

I have tried the very expensive brand of baby lotion beginning with "J" as a make up remover . I have used baby lotion for this purpose for years. The best for me is Mr. T's value baby lotion at 11p the one begining with "J" makes my eyes water and is too harsh for my skin. 11p does it for me - cos I'm worth it.....:):AToo fat to be Felicity Kendal , but aim for a bit more of the good life :A0

I buy some cheaper toiletries from savers i know you can buy products cheaper than the supermarkets. I also use an own brand supermarket washing powder sometimes because it scored highly in the which test. I vote for brands mainly though, you can trust them and they always taste nice.
Its what you do with ingredients that counts most. I'd far rather eat a homemade tomato sauce with value tomatoes and some garlic and herbs from the garden than a ready made, branded jar of dolmio. A whole lot better for your body too.
Personally, I choose to save on the family food shop (amongst other things) as it allows me to work less and be at hime with my son more. Not to mention it leaves spends for family treats - not i may add because i smoke/gamble/whatever other slur you may make against those of us who don't buy into branding0 -

Oh bah, what a snobby attitude. And also partially incorrect, at least when it comes to the arguement that the higher the price = the better the ingredients. A good proportion of the higher cost of branded products goes on advertising and fancier labels, you know, not the ingredients. Anyway if you really want to make your body feel nice you don't buy branded foods at all, you buy fresh natural seasonal ingredients with minimal or no processing and cook them from scratch every day. Nothing to do with brands at all. Oh, and if you're arguing that cheap own brands contain more unhealthy things like additives, colourings, sugar and fats? Have a look at the labels. Very often cheaper brands contain less of things like fat (double cream, butter) and just less added muck in general. Try reading the label of a branded product next to a comparable value brand one day. You'll be amazed.
I don't drink, smoke or gamble btw and I could afford to by the top brands if I wanted. Why don't I? Because I've got the common sense to understand that marketing does not necessarily equal quality, I can read and understand labelling and I don't like to waste money unneccesarily. Being aware of how you spend your money is not scrimping, it's intelligent behavior. Otherwise you might as well just throw it on the ground tbh.Val.0 -

Thanks for the tip about Waitrose Droitwich branch and Tuesdays. I spend my hard won luncheon vouchers in there (LVs earned from surveys for the company that likes to be secret). I made the mistake of getting some strawberries the other day which had a display by date of 19 August, I ate a punnet and put the other in the fridge, pulled it out to have strawberries on my cereal and the things had grown a fur coat despite the fridge being cold - alas I couldnt spare the petrol to take them back (I live in Longbridge, bham).
I do like value stuff - e.g. chopped tomatoes, asda's biscuits and will shop in Aldi and Lidl.0 -
I shop at Waitrose and Tescos, depending on which one is nearest to where i'm travelling that day! I prefer to buy meat at Waitrose but the fruit and veg always seems fresher at Tesco.
I suppose if people are bothered about value stuff then you could pop your mouthwash, washing up liquid etc in a cupboard between uses! There are some branded goods I will always buy such as Helmanns mayo or Heinz baked beans and ketchup because I do prefer the taste. I would be gutted if everyone switched to value brands and Heinz went bust - I like quite a few of their products!0 -
I've admittedly not tried all that many value products as yet.
I've tried a few things in the past and been disappointed..and I'm afraid I just prefer the taste of either Heinz beans or Waitrose own beans so those are the only ones I'll buy. Tesco's own seemed a bit watery to me.
Anyway, I haven't ever tried value washing up liquid - but will do after reading this thread.
I started buying Tesco value toilet rolls when my lodger was here as we'd somehow get through about 5 rolls a week!
I can rarely find it in Tesco now but a pound stretcher has just opened in town and I'll be buying the 18 pack for £2.99 (I think it is). Have used it before and it was fine.
My lodger has now gone though and so far in just over a week I've only used one and a half rolls out of a previously bought 4 pack so goodness knows how long the pack of 18 will last me! Haha!
I cannot believe that we were getting thoruhg so many toilet rolls between us when me on my own is so few! Shocking! She must have eaten the stuff!
I've recently bought some washup things - value ones as they were only 16p for a 5 pack - they are fine and for 16p...well..nuff said!
We have a Lidl opening here soon so I'm looking forward to seeing what they have.
One thing I won't change is my shampoo and conditioner as I have long naturally wavy hair and Aussie Moist is the only stuff which agrees with my hair!
I used to always buy Nescafe Alta Rica (years ago though) as I like a fairly strong tasting coffee. I now cannot have anything else but Tesco's own Rich Roast - it tastes better and the big jar is £2.98.
I absolutely loved the Ikea jars used for decanting on page 5 (think it was page 5)..they look so nice!
One thing which baffles me though about value type shopping is Pound shops.
They can kind of pull you in but you need to be careful.
I almost bought some washing up liquid there one time..then took it out of my basket..went to Sainsbury's and the same product was 79p!
I think they make a lot of money on the 'over excitement' of everything being a pound..but you can end up spending more on something if you're not careful what you buy.
I also just had to quote this from page 6 of this thread as it just made me laugh out loud this morning and I'm still grinning!! Haha!daphne~sparkle wrote: »Great thread :T
A valid point to make to those who will not eat Value goods is that there is NO Tesco Stripy factory producing all the Stripy goods.
Absolutely love it!! Hehe!0 -

Producing own label products are how named brands manage to keep their factories running all year round. Products have different packaging but in most cases the same or very similar products.

Exactly what I was going to say. My OH works in the automation industry and deals a lot with food manufacturers. A quick trip round a supermarket with him will leave you in no doubt what little difference there is between Brand A or Brand V. Sure the recipes may differ slightly (more fruit in posh museli than cheap? Add your own) but the factories are often the same.
I try the value version of everything and if I don't like it, I move up the scale. There are very few things I can't stand and I certainly don't care who sees the packaging. The only times I decant things is as others have said, for ease of use eg flour, cereal etc

We admit to being complete supermarket tarts, as we have all of them bar Lidl within a reasonable distance. We go to whichever has the best combination of deals that weekend. All of our tinned and dried goods are at the value level, unless something is on a serious discount, e.g. BOGOF equivalent or better. My only brand vice though is Pepsi Max. We stockpile it when we see a good offer. Recently we tried Sainsbury's Zero cola, and found it to be a really good alternative when well chilled.
Fruit and veg are either loose, value or whoopsied, depending on what's available.
I have never bothered about being seen using value products because we're the ones saving money, to the point that we have managed to knock a serious hole in the mortgage and build up savings by living quietly.Surviving the ups and downs of life with DH
