Tesco Value snobbery??

I don't look at the value stuff in my cupboard and think "oh dear, look how poor I am", I look at it and think "wow, how stupidly expensive would it have been if I'd bought branded stuff, aren't I good for saving so much money!".
Half the time (if not more) the value stuff is from the same manufacturer as the branded stuff anyway.
This is EXACTLY what I think. In fact...erm...I kind of gloat about all the people who are dumb enough to get suckered in to the more expensive stuff...which is not necessarily of better quality anyway. Meanwhile, the money in my vacations account keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger.... :rotfl::dance: *inhales deeply* "Ahhhhh! I love the smell of a good deal in the morning! (or just about any time, really...)" :dance:0 -

Most people gloat and compete to see who spent most on their latest, must-have gadget... my mum and I compete to see who can get the lowest price on a chicken or something :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Did some grocery shopping in Tesco's today, and because of this thread I think I'm more conscious about the whole thing of buying value brands. I noticed just how many people do buy value stuff, and yet again how all the value or tesco's own brand stuff is on the bottom shelf, and the most expensive equivalents are at eye level  Yes, they're making some effort at reducing prices e.g. some fruit and veg, but the sneaky way they store the own label/brands is really bugging me. I did ask one of the floor managers why that was the case, and was it to subtly get us to buy more expensive goods - he ummmmed and ahhhhd but couldn't really deny it. Talk about a woman on a mission ....:D :rotfl:
its not really 'sneaky' anymore if everyone knows about it. if the value stuff was at eye level everyone would buy it and theyd stop selling it as they make no money on it. they make effort to reduce prices because it brings the punters in, not cus they actually give a monkeys about saving you money!0 -
All the girls at work were questioning me about why my shopping bills are cheap, so I told them that I shop at Aldi etc, but they were horrified! Couldnt possibly give up their branded loo rolls, baked beans, tea bags, coffee etc, or even TRY the cheaper brands. They all spend ages trying to find which place has the cheapest branded loo rolls instead and then go to half a dozen shops to get it all. Needless to say they all do as much overtime as they can and have to put the gas bill on the credit card. (I chortle to myself, I cant help it!)
I know this is a thread about food, but we have been on holiday this week, and I couldnt help but notice how many people (everyone except my family I think) had branded clothing. My OH is totally the opposite- he will not wear anything with an obvious logo on it. (He does tend to buy branded goods, but he buys clothes so rarely and wears stuff until it falls apart it tends to be worthwhile buying better quality stuff) but he likes the smallest most unobtrusive logo, he hates to advertise! We went to a surf wear factory shop and I couldnt believe the price of the kids stuff, even reduced! My 9 yo dd would not notice a logo, (more if it was the right colour!) so its the parents brand snobbery at work there.0 -
i too hate wearing branded logo clothing because I don't see why I should give the manufacturers free advertising. I wonder what would happen if we sent the manufacturers an invoice for displaying their logo every time we wore it. After all, they pay householders torspace to display their bill boardings on the side of their houses so why shouldn't we get paid for wearing their logo on our bodies, or carrying it on our handbags? Perhaps I'll start a thread on "Up your Income" and see how much support there would be for this idea and whether there's any chance of getting a "reverse" advertising campaign going !0

Sad thing is though, a lot of people probably don't realise the marketing and advertising ploys that Tesco and others use! I must say, a few months back it would never have occurred to me how sneaky they are!lightisfading wrote: »its not really 'sneaky' anymore if everyone knows about it. if the value stuff was at eye level everyone would buy it and theyd stop selling it as they make no money on it. they make effort to reduce prices because it brings the punters in, not cus they actually give a monkeys about saving you money!0

Lovely to see there is still interest in this thread, I think more and more of us are looking for ways to save at the supermarket these days, its just that my 'credit crunch' hit me a bit earlier than others!!!
I remember previously I did a search on the tesco site for the word 'value' and 644 items came up, just done a search now and 547 items came up.................hmm wonder what is going on there, maybe they are playing us at our own game now???!!!!!Lol.
Great to hear all the tips on decanting etc etc0 -
Just a note, if you want all the Tesco value stuff you need to search on "tesco value" or "T value" (this is what they use if the description is too long for them to use the whole word Tesco. Tesco Value gives me 459 products and T Value a further 21. If you just search on value you get everything with value anywhere in its description, such as "5 pair 15 denier value tight natural medium" which aren't blue and white packed, so (I assume) nothing to do with the Tesco range, plus things from the added value meat shelf, the organic added value shelf etc.0

Popped into Mr T at lunch time. There was a sight I should have captured on camera and posted... they have made a "value" wall, every single tesco value product is stacked on the back wall! I didn't half chuckle to myself thinking of this forum!
I stocked up on quite a few value items myself, and realised that I spend my time walking around the supermarket staring just above ground level - i.e. where the value stuff is!
Can anyone recommend to me decent containers to decant the following into?
Pasta - currently sits in its bag in my cupboard but I could do with a tin or jar or similar for it.
Also handwash - Lidl showergel currently in old Dove dispenser, but would like a nice non-branded one for the bathroom if poss0 -
Naturally - I use large glass and plastic sweet jars which newsagents and sweet shops use for selling sweets for our pasta and rice storage. They both hold a generous quantity and I find that often the small corner type sweet shops will have empty containers they are willing to dispose of.0
