Tesco Value snobbery??

Ah thankyou primrose! I should have thought of that, years ago I went out and sorted my parents out with those jars for the dog's food - and they still use them - must be 12 years later!:eek:0

My husband used to be a terrible brand/ value snob but since the Tesco adverts about the 'ugly mushrooms' he has been a complete convert to value fruit a veg. Just because a tomato is not 52 - 63mm why is it unfit to go in a salad? He now says we should try other value products. Ha - he hasn't eaten a 'real' Weetabix for about 5 years. I've always decanted stuff into other containers, not for snobbery but because things keep fresh and tidy. The bonus of that is when I do switch to a value product nobody notices.0

Have read this thread with interest, but thought it might amuse you to know that, when I told my SIL that my dd (13) liked to buy clothes in Primark with pocket money, and that we shopped in Aldi for pesto, breakfast cereal, tissues, ice creams and we'd bought 4 computers from them over the years, her reply was that she could never go into 'shops like that' unless she wore a paperbag over head. Very considerate, I thought ....0

I went into Lidl yesterday to get some fruit and veg. I don't go there very often as our nearest one is quite a drive but i love those places.
Well, they didn't have much veg left so i was grabbing things on the way round and ended up with almost half a trolly full of food, whilst i was there thinking, oh god i hope i've got enough on me for this lot, it all went through the till and came out at £25. I was unbelievably chuffed as its been that long since i shopped there (we do top up shops instead of big shops)0 -
I have absolutely no issue with buying value stuff at all and really couldn't be bothered decanting it into anything to put on a show for anyone, to be honest my thoughts are that, well yes I could afford to be buying 'finest' versions of everything but then wouldn't have the spare cash to throw at my debts/save for xmas/holidays etc etc and I would much rather have a great holiday next year and have reduced my debts by almost £6k in the last 4 months than have a box of Ariel on display!
My attitude has changed a lot over the last couple of years, I've never been a brand snob as such but was always worried that other people might think I was 'poor', now I really couldn't care less what other people think, if they think we are poor then that's fine, it doesn't interest me in the slightestAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -

I suppose I'm lucky that DD (19) realises that branded doesn't always mean better. We were in a store a few weeks ago and the young couple in front of us were buying branded tins of tomatoes at 79p each. DD was horrified!
I've tried most of the tinned toms, HEINZ ones are lovely (make great pasta sauces as the juice is lovely) Napolina are very overrated;)0 -
I'm another one who doesn't give a hoot what other shoppers (or friends) think about what I'm buying. Have been an own label shopper for years and in some instances a value brand (anybody remember Fine Fare 'No Frills' range?) shopper. But I do have a laugh at the expressions on checkout operators faces when they see all my green and white SmartPrice labels and then the catfood goes through (Whiskas Oh-So-Meaty!). The little tyke will just not eat any other food - and believe me we HAVE tried. He resorts to bringing in dead mice to show his disgust at other foods!!!
Even my No.2 son (who was a brand snob as a teen) is now a converted own/value label shopper (how things change when they have to pay the bills themselves!) - and he now rings me to ask if the prices per lb/kg are good value for money.
But my wonderfully co-ordinated kitchen cupboards do mean that we have to look very carefully at any tins that get opened - so easy to open a tin of fruit cocktail instead of baked beans!
I'm also a dedicated whoopsie shopper and this week my local Asda had lots of Irish Minced Beef reduced from £1.00 to 65p per 500g - I grabbed 3 of them, 8 Extra Special Jumbo Cumberland Sausages(750g) reduced from £3.00 to £1.70 (weather not good enough for barbecues now!), a tray of 8 chicken thighs for £1.70 and a wonderful piece of 28day matured rib of beef reduced from £10.00 down to £5.00. The minced beef has been divided up into 250g packages in freezer bags, the sausages have been divided into 2's in freezer bags, the chicken thighs divided into 2's and the whole lot has gone into the freezer. I see lots of cottage/shepherd's pies/chilli/sausage casseroles/chicken casseroles for the winter. Even yesterday's huge pot of scouse has yielded enough for freezing or for having later today.

Held a dinner party on New Years Eve and for the first time used tesco value apples in a pork dish and people said how tasty they were and asking where they could get them! I certainly will be buying them again - simply called Tesco Market Value Apples0

It doesn't bother me if people know that I buy value, however I do like to decant stuff sometimes just because it's nicer.
Look at it this way... it gives people the message that you are sensible with money - paying £2 for a bottle of shower gel when you can one at Asda for 8p just doesn't seem sensible!0 -
I am not a brand name snob, nor is my 19 year old daughter. Not so my 15 year old son, who informed me that he couldn't take White Rock bottled water to school(available at Iceland at £1 for 6 500ml bottles) as it tasted "naff". I now decant it into an old bottle of Evian, and he has not complained since. I think peer pressure is to blame. We could all learn a little something from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.0
