Not completely on topic perhaps, but reading the OP reminded me of when I put 'cheap' stuff into a more expensive container recently, with interesting results.. ;)

My OH swears by Listerine mouth wash. I usually reluctantly buy it wishing I could get him to use a cheaper one - a few months ago I bought a cheaper one (Dentyl or something.. kind of 'mid range' one perhaps..) and he moaned about it, so I went back to buying the ridiculously overpriced Listerine again

Anyway, a few weeks ago I bought one of the cheapest Tesco ones: I didn't dare go for the 'value' one, so I got one that looked like it might be a bit better: 24 hour protection or somesuch. When the Listerine ran out, I poured the cheapie one into the bottle. I waited for him to use it a few times then said that I wasn't keen on 'that Listerine'. He said it was fine, and did the job. When I showed him the empty Tesco bottle, he was rather surprised: called me a sneaky moo but found it rather amusing. :D

People sometimes swear by a certain product, without having really checked the alternatives: a bit like when kids won't eat things because they presume they won't like them.
Brilliant, its even better when you point out to them how much you could save, get them in on the act, and then each have a small treat every so often :D

Can vouch for value items disappearing - several over the past few weeks, the latest being the 4pk kitchen rolls. They weren't even showing online and in my favourites (Tesco) it said currently out of stock. Got some at Wilko's. :D

We use quite a bit of Value/Smart Price items. Always buy the bananas now, peppers, apples, peanuts, tinned chopped tomato, peanut butter, block butter, frozen peas, large bricks of cheese for cooking, biscuits, sponge cleaners, dried pastas and probably a few others that don't come to mind atm.

I've got two 'standards' and if they pass those, they're in! :rotfl: It's got to taste good and the nutritional value has got to be at least close to a "better" brand.

I have happily shopped at Aldi for some years and their own brand goods are great. They do not come in distinctive wrappers eg red white and blue stripes that shout cheap!
The only thing I must say is that own brand white rum tastes 100% better when served from a Bacardi bottle.

hi everyone i am new to mse although i have been following with great enthusiasm for a few months but never had the nerve to join till now. i am addicted and cant wait to get started on some sort of challenge when i figure out how to use it properly.
compared to you lot i am completely useless, but hope to make up for it as dh( i hope this is husband) has 3 months redundancy notice and i will be copying a lot of your ideas. Anyway my Tesco snobbery was put to the test yesterday when i held off for end of day bargains as well as quite a few own brands. It was really amusing as i noticed other people were circling around the reduced ailse. Paid for shopping and had 2 bags of stuff for less than £5.00 YIPEEE111 no longer an own brand snob. addicted!.

I thought Asda also delivered? But maybe not in your area I guess

Sadly not, it's only in the last couple of months that Tesco have started, until then there was nothing, only the really manky co-op in town with no parking and the nearly as manky Tesco 8 miles away!

  • I work in a Tesco supermarket doing the internet shopping and the customers do not order value goods and we are not allowed to provide them at any time, even if the product they want is only available in a value item.
