  • Have you tried airbnb website? Lots and lots of expats leave over cny for travels to take advantage of the public holidays with many subletting their apartments.

Places like HK and Singapore and Macau are quite quiet over Chinese New Year.
Family time for the Chinese and ex pats will be on holiday somewhere else.
    Restaurants closed etc etc.

Jet lag will also mean that you won't be on top form.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

HK Chinese are with their families, but tourists from mainland are over in droves. Hotels, especially in TST, have for last several years been pretty full over CNY.

Have a think about where you'd like to stay. The more affordable (hotel) accommodation tends to be in Kowloon, especially around TST. That's a very lively area with lots of restaurants and shopping, plus it's where the big CNY night parade takes place. The fireworks are in Victoria Harbour.

It's very much a personal choice, but I probably prefer to stay on HK island in the Causeway Bay area, and travel over to TST for entertainment. My Chinese friends are big fans of Kowloon/TST. There is also the area around Central, where most of the older 5 star hotels are (though newer ones are in Kowloon). If you are using airbnb you might find something in Happy Valley, close to Causeway Bay, as a lot of expats in that area. I've never used airbnb in HK, so not sure. Happy Valley racecourse is also there, which is open to the public as a park when no racing is on, you can actually jog round the outside of the course (if that's your thing).

More info on CNY on the below link, and Timeout also have a HK site.

Cheapest way to/from the airport is of course the bus, but the airport express train is under £10 each way and half the time. I think they also offer free shuttles with the ticket, to major hotel areas, from Kowloon and Central stations.

Hong Kong every time. Get a good ATM card (N and P perhaps) and just use the machines: they are everywhere.

Seventh Anniversary 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
i flew in feb last year with airfrance london-paris-hong kong for under £400 near identical to your dates

i see turkish airlines have good prices at the moment

long way to go for 4 days as its a 16hr flight so time you get there you'll have 2 days before you have to come back , i went for 7 last year ( had 6 nights there ) and not really enough time although i did cram most things in and went to Macau as well for a day

accomodation is silly money , i stayed at the above mentioned chungking mansions , for the price is was good
