When I had the smart meters installed, no instructions for the smart meter and IHD were left, neither were batteries supplied for the IHD. Rather than use the supplied power adapter, I use a USB port from my computer to supply the IHD with power.

I'd really like to know how to get meter readings from the meter. As my meters are in a really awkward spot, I had hoped that having the smart meters installed would reduce the need to access the meters. Instead I still have to access the meters and fiddle about with buttons trying to guess what my meter reading is.

We had similar problems but must say the fitting of the meters and IHD were carried out very professionally and we certainly had no complaints on that side of it.

The IHD was programmed correctly and in the six months we were unable to access our account we were able to transfer the readings from the IHD to a spreadsheet. We needed to do this as we had only been in the house a few months and OVO had estimated our usage at almost three times the actual figures. I know Ovo give 3% interest on credit balances but I would rather have a few hundred pounds extra in my current account that earns 3% as well!

    Wasn't your IHD programmed correctly?

It's a problem reading the meters but it can be done. At one stage Ovo would not believe the figures I submitted to them (from the IHD) so they made me take a photo of the meter reading before they would produce an up to date account! Even now they are still forecasting our usage wrong although I have asked them on four different occasions to sort it out
  • I can't see on my IHD where the meter readings are. If I press dual, it gives me an estimated bill for gas and electric seperately.

Where are you finding the meter readings?

Can't see them on my IHD. I press 9 on the meter and video the display with my phone - it is easy to unpick what is what.

    Menu/History/Month

You will then see Cuml: and the figure at the top RHS is your cumulative usage (in MWh) since the meter was installed.

Press 9 on your meter and the figure converted to kWh should be the same!

What is an IHD, i am refusing to have one fitted after reading up on the potential dangers of them PLUS we are paying for them to be replaced !!!!

    http://stopsmartmeters.org.uk/

Loads of info above and a good template letter.

My bills are NEVER incorrect as i just input the meter readings when i pay online.

I will stick with Analogue meter rather than have a 'microwave' withing 4 feet of my living/sitting area!!!!

    20. The UK Government has said ‘Smart’ Meters will cost more than £11billion for estimated savings of just £25 per
home/year – and that saving will only possible if customers have at least two ‘Smart’ Meters and succeed in changing
their own behaviour to create the savings. Not only will there be a need for this £11billion to be clawed back, in part,
through my energy/utility bills, but many new ‘Smart’ Meters only have a 10 year lifespan before requiring replacement
    – which is a shorter lifespan than current analogue meters. They will potentially require more regular servicing too.

There was info somewhere on how much is costs each household approximately of the 11 Billion because there is NO WAY the fat cat energy companies will be paying !!

See what happens when a few people have a moan at smart meters, we get ridiculous comments like that. In any case, whats wrong with a microwave ? You moaners give people like stylus360 ammo for daft ideas as they sit on their wifi laptops or watching wifi telly or of course their wifi mobiles clamped on their ears.. I applaud OVO for their free smart prepay to new customers and I notice they are already the cheapest prepay tariffs and prices will only head down in time with supplier confidence in their fuss free operation

If it aint broke don't try to fix it !!!

and if you even bothered to read up the waves emitted are totally different.

Oh and say goodbye to your 'METER READING MONKEY JOB' if everyone is prepared to have one.....

Look Stylus smart prepays will be a real boon and bring in much cheaper prices for the poorest in the UK. There s no reason once supplier confidence gains why smart prepay tariffs can t match or even lower direct debit fixed deals. We re all bathing in radio waves anyway and having a poke at smarts with their miniscule output is ridiculous. The gas smart only sends a read once a day , the electric one an hour. Meter readers are still visiting smarts occasionally . I ve had my smart meters a few years now, installed by BG with no trouble at all and as far as I m aware they never cost me a penny. OK some jobs may go, but we re actually taking people on at moment and they ve got us doing all manner of other jobs, Today I ve been undercover snooping on pubs using BT Sports and dropping off TV licence reminders to licence fiddlers before the BBC collar them. Meter reading is a dead duck, you can t stop progress... well maybe you can!

You honestly think that the energy companies are going to foot the £11 Billion pound bill !!!
It's VERY early days with regards these meters so time will tell, they have already been hacked in the US.

I'm sitting here with my tin foil hat on mind and you got me thinking about my TV License now, i only have internet honestly, so i think i do not need one...lol

So do you use a mobile phone, wifi router, laptop, Bluetooth, DECT phone if so they are all radiating radio waves and a lot closer to your head & body than any smart meter.

Regarding cost then there's nowt you can do about it, they will get rolled out and you'll probably end up having to pay a premium to have a little man come round and read your meter. As I've said before you need a meter so why not a smart one.
