Odin will work. If your getting as far as downloading the file to the phone then as mentioned your doing it wrong.
ODIN and file on PC connected to PC via USB cable. Ensure battery is fully charged also.
Ive had Kies say my phones not connected when i have been able to browse the phone and memory card via windows yet kies says its not connected.

My 2012 32GB Nexus 7 was slow enough to be unusable (tap, wait 5 seconds, response) and after looking at all the technical stuff to do and tools to download and use, I just did a factory reset. 95% of stuff is restored straight away. You may lose some stuff from invidual apps...0
