I have the original Galaxy Note N7000 and it is running on Jellybean v4.1.2 after updating OTA (Over The Air) a long time ago.
Updating it to anything more recent is not possible unless you root the device and flash the kernel.

When you got it, did you register it with an account with Samsung online? If not, I think that may be something to look into doing.

A factory reset before attempting to get it to update will take it back to the Android version that was last installed successfully, but will clean out all setting and files, so be prepared for that. You can copy stuff like photos and music from the Note via USB to folders on your computer for backup.

You may still be able go to the Samsung site (after registering the device!) and download the kernel for v4.1.2 onto a computer and then, if you have to, use KIES to install it. KIES is not particularly good software and it can cause problems even though it is/was recommended for use by Samsung.

For your own sake use Google to read up on the tried and tested procedures for installing an update, make many notes and re-read it before going ahead.

    4.4 is supposedly possible !

    4.4 is not 5 .

Their are a number of Non Samsung 4.4 firmwares for Note 1 .Essentially modified stock Android firmware not Samsung Touchwiz firmware .

I didn't say that it was - just a fair advance from its current version..

Yes, but the handset needs to be rooted.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

Nexus Root Toolkit offers an Android Backup option which saves game data.

I don't know whether you HAVE to be rooted for this to work, but I have rooted my phone anyway.

my updates to Lollipop were eventful, only because Google decided to change they way they do OTA updates. I needed to restore stock 4.4.4 "system" and "bootloader" images before the OTA would run.

Apart from that my Nexus7 2013 edition is running a lot slower with 5 than it did with 4.4.4, very noticeable lag in apps.

Might need to do a wipe and start with a fresh Lollipop image in a week or so if it gets worse.
