Android backup

Does backing up data to google servers -then restoring the OS mean that the latest version of Android is installed !?At present - my Samsung note 1 is on 4.0.4 and I have been unable to update this due to errors and wondered what version would install if I did a data back up and rebuild via this method....

i think (and may well be wrong) that google backup is only data. So the OS will not update.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

to be fair, with my 2013 nexus 7 i have not had many issues at all. a few apps stopped working, one of which has already been updated.

Data is backed up to Google not firmware/ OS .
The firmware on the phone including OS is installed from the factory . A copy is kept as an image on the phone this is restored on a factory reset . Any OTA or Kies firmware update also replaces this image .
Update problems backup data and contacts and try a factory reset .

    This got me thinking...
I assume that Google now has access to billions of pieces of (supposedly secure) data - data that many people would prefer not to be publically revealed - not only passwords (WiFi - which will be backed up) as well as Email !!
Think about it - Would you trust Google to hold on to such data - not encrypted ?
Before anyone asks - is it encrypted ?
According to Tomsguide - no it is not - which to me - means that it is held in "plain text" which anyone could access ....

I tried a factory reset - which reinstalled 2.3 (gingerbread) as it was when I bought it - and on running the update - it went up to 4.0.4 and wouldn't go beyond this - although I know that this device has an available update to 4.1 !!
I have tried both OTA and using KIES (Why did I bother with KIES ?) - same result
I haven't tried rooting it - because I am scared of killing it !!

(although I know that this device has an available update to 4.1 !! )

If that is so then that's what shows on OTA or Kies .
So how do you know 4.1 is available GB to 4.1 step to far in all probability ??
I cannot check as Note 1 is returned as unknown .

The note 1 (GTN7000) is upgradeable to 4.1 in the UK
    see http://uk.ask.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_%28original%29?lang=en
Some people have managed to get 4.4 on to this device also....

The only UK updates i see are Vodafone UK and CPW models .
If their is an official release then the path is always .
Samsung to phone vendor who pass the update or not to OTA and Kies . If it does not show then vendor has not released the firmware or phones firmware is reporting the wrong build to Kies .
