Engagement parties - what?! Why have a party to celebrate an engagement? = excuse for presents.

Engagement parties were very common in the early 1970s.:)

Don't presents get given before the wedding though?.

    Message too short.

I just don't understand them. Yes, have a celebration with your family and friends, fair enough. But they are becoming more and more of an excuse to get presents IMO.

My niece had one last year. I thought they'd gained in popularity again.

They definitely happen a lot now, everyone I know that's got engaged so far has had one.

I give or send my present to arrive before the wedding usually. the exception would be if I were giving something which wasn't suitable to post and they weren't local. I would then take it with me to the wedding. Am I that unusual?:o

    IThe invite says:

    Dear Buzzy,

You are invited to Friend's bridal shower on date. We will have an afternoon of cake, games and present opening.

It's a challenge. Can you wrap a present that will take all afternoon to open?

  • Present showing has been going on for many generations. Usually the presents are displayed in the brides parents home. I don't know if it happens that much anymore, more so if think when people didn't leave home until they got married.

Not sure if it's just a regional thing though?

ETA: I can't see why that would be classed as 'vulgar'? Just a nice way for everyone to see what the bride and groom has received.

Im in Scotland and I remember when some of my friends were getting married 25 years ago it was the done thing to go to a show of presents as we called it.

Nothing new I think, just that Americanisms have taken over.
