Is this a new variation on Present showing?

Lets hope not! Luckily Present Showing doesn't seem to have reached our shores yet....that's surely plumbing the depths of vulgarity :rotfl:

Present showing has been going on for many generations. Usually the presents are displayed in the brides parents home. I don't know if it happens that much anymore, more so if think when people didn't leave home until they got married.

Not sure if it's just a regional thing though?

ETA: I can't see why that would be classed as 'vulgar'? Just a nice way for everyone to see what the bride and groom has received.

It was certainly something I've come across.

I think I would go along, play the games, eat the cake and enjoy the day. I wouldn't take a present though, ONE gift for the wedding is more than enough. If the bride comments on your lack of gift then I think it shows that she values presents more than time with her friends, and if that's the case I wouldn't bother going to the wedding.

How tacky, I thought baby showers were bad enough, but this tops it.

Could the present opening on the invite mean wedding present opening and not Bridal Shower presents?

Is this a new variation on Present showing?

Bridal showers are before the wedding - as sort of bridal "send off" so I wouldn't think so.

Was present showing regional ? I've never come across it darn sarf.

I'm nearly 30 and this whole 'shower' thing has got big amongst my friends.

Engagement parties - what?! Why have a party to celebrate an engagement? = excuse for presents.

Wedding gift lists - totally vulgar and unnecessary to actually ASK for certain gifts - turns my stomach.

Baby showers - cheesy = another excuse for more presents.

    I sound like a grinch!

I live in the North, so maybe it's just a Northern thing? I think it is/was a popular thing in Scotland, and I live just over the border.
  • I always decline, I think the idea is vulgar and greedy!

My SIL had a baby shower, I just gave the preset when the baby was born, no need to give twice, so I just made an excuse not to go!

Don't presents get given before the wedding though?

Didn't realise that engagement parties had gone out of fashion. They were the norm in my experience.
