Nice choice of clothes for a 13 girl

  • I have a 15 year old niece, for the past few years she's been into New Look, Topshop, River Island, ASOS, Jack Wills & Hollister. As some of the others said, gift vouchers for these sorts of places might be the best bet, she's probably more into developing her own personal tastes and styles now so perhaps it's better for her to pick things out for herself. bigmomma051204 has the right idea with the suggestion a day of shopping for the two of you, you can still feel involved in the picking of the clothes that way, plus always nice to have girl time.

    Gap may be a compromise?

I buy for my daughter from there as well as fat face and quicksilver/roxy. I won't buy her from asda/primark as she thinks they are only to be worn a couple of times then it's ok to bin. Not very mse or ethical really
  • I'd be more inclined to give her a "shopping trip" for Christmas. My mum used to do this with me (sometimes still does and I'm 23!) and we go out for the day shopping in town spending lots of money on Boxing Day sales :)

I think 13 was an awkward age - I was mostly wearing stuff from next (not a good look!) but I loved places like New Look, H&M and Miss Selfridge

I agree, 13 year olds want to be treated like adults, not children, letting her choose for herself (with a budget, and with the power to veto anything totally inappropriate) will make her feel more grown up and you spending the time together will make her feel extra special

I would never buy her anything without her being with me though. I just stand there and nod, otherwise i get the withering look.

I'm very familiar with the withering look, lol! My DD is 13, I'm only allowed to buy her school uniform and socks without consultation these days. The best thing I could do for a birthday or Christmas gift is give her money or a gift card with £X on it and left her go shopping with her friends, the fun three girls can get out of spending a £50 gift card is immense. It took DD and her pals an entire day to spend the £50 her uncle gave her for clothes on her last birthday. She came back with a very nice selection of t-shirts and accessories.

My DD likes H&M, Primark, New Look and TopShop. She looks at the Boden catalogue when it drops through the door but she's firmly of the opinion that the clothes are bought by parents who want their children to remain at the cute five year old stage as long as possible, no self respecting 13 year old with a fashion edge would set foot in the shop willingly.
