No idea what that was then. My 2007 gets 50+ mpg on a run and averages 47. My old 2000 model TDI got 50mpg consistently.

Thanks, I'll have a look at them. It may have been that the hire car was poorly handled, etc.

As has been mentioned, try a Signum, if you can find one, a seriously under-rated car that VX badly marketed. With BMWs, I wouldn't bother with the 525 diesel, it is slower and thirstier than the vastly superior 530 and there's a lot knocking about.

Spotted a fully loaded 3.0 V6 diesel one for £1350 earlier, no mention of history though.

Cheapest one I found was 95 miles away and was £1295 for a 2.2DTi with 130k on it but had a tear in the rear seats. A bit too far to travel though really.

I am going to keep looking, have about 4 weeks before I have to hand my car over to the finance company so I need to find something within the next 3 weeks or so.

95 miles is too far to travel? I was about to go down to Cornwall (approx 300 miles) to get a car that seemed to be what i wanted.

But a few days before i was due to go i found one much closer. A few weeks before i went to view 8 cars in one day using a whole tank of fuel in the process.

My last car came from Cardiff (about 400mi round trip), as they offered significantly better lease terms than anyone else.

The one I have now came from a dealer in London, for the same reason

Yeah seen that one but it's 240 miles away from me.

As I said earlier in the thread, my wife is a relatively new driver so I need to take into consideration her driving back on her own so want to limit the distance a bit. I'm also a bit cautious about travelling too far for a car that I might not like when I get there.

The difference is, we're talking a £1000 (ish) car here. There is every possibility that sellers aren't honest about the condition of a car, or the mileage (one car I saw online was advertised with 130k on it, when I asked for more photo's, one of the photo's showed it was at 139k). I'm also not sold on a particular make/model so I won't know if I like the car until I see it, sit in it, and test drive it.

If I knew 100% that I wanted a VW Passat and I knew what they drove like, etc, I wouldn't have a problem with travelling, and may even get a train, but that's not the case unfortunately.

Problem is, you might not like anything that's next door to you. You seriously limit your options with an unwillingness to travel.

Wouldn't your wife perhaps benefit from the experience of driving a bit further?

A month or so after my wife passed her test, she drove from Northumberland down to Essex on her own for Christmas in snowy, dark conditions. Passing her test means she's been assessed as competent to drive a car, and that includes for more than the odd five miles here and there.

I do completely understand what you're saying and I know she was assessed, and it's probably more to do with my insecurities than hers. I do worry about her when she's driving, and I know I shouldn't.

That being said, I would still be reluctant to travel 100+ miles for a car that I don't know I like. As I said, if I knew what car I wanted (i.e. a VW Passat or BMW 530, etc), I would be more inclined to travel, be it by car or train). It's just that I'm not 100% decided on a specific make or model.

I do have family 70 odd miles away from where I live so they are keeping an eye out on what's available near them and I have been looking on Autotrader without putting a distance limit on but not found anything that grabs me yet :)

That's the spirit. EOTD, she's probably way happier driving around than you are thinking about it.

Way to go will be take a good look and test drive a few cars locally you think you like, then look for the best example you can of the one you like most.
