The astra comes with same engine.
I've been in a fiesta same age as yours, guess that doesn't suit either as it appears same size inside to me.

I test drove a corsa and it was quite a bit smaller than my Fiesta. The newer ones are a bit bigger but I can't afford them.

It's a 2009 Manual (so Insignia rather than Vectra).

So hardly comparable then to the 1.9 Vectra lump I'm refering to.

Plus a Vectra 2.2 will be better on fuel than a Fiesta 1.4 auto.

What are the possibilities of getting a manual licence?

However, if you're doing a lot of miles, the extra to get a newer car might pay for itself in terms of fuel economy as this has changed so much over the last 10 years.

Bear in mind a lot of that change in fuel eonomy over the past 10 years (in fact, longer!) appears to be on paper rather than reality.

If you look at the real life figures people are getting, the gap between those and the official ones is getting bigger all the time - at suspiciously close to the same rate as the official figures say consumption is improving

Spending, say, an extra £4k to gain maybe 3 or 4 mpg in real life is going to take a lot of miles to recoup!

Well the costs involved in driving lessons and tests just to get a manual license isn't really cost effective at the moment.

Most of the bigger early 90s diesels can be had for a song, have far less electronics to go wrong, and can be surprisingly cheap to run.

Mercs and BMWs spring to mind. Strong engines, well built cars, and will get you well into the 40s to the gallon in 2.5l auto form if you don't have lead foot. The auto option tends to help the engines last as well because it's not possible to lug them along in too high a gear and hard to rev the crepe out of them in too low, which are two of the biggest diesel killers.

Also no DPF (or even cat in many cases) to worry about and most common parts aren't as bad as people assume. Track rod end on our 525 was a tenner from the local factors, or £40 for genuine BMW from the dealership.

Insurance can be surprisingly pleasant as well. The 525 is in my partners name, with a 6 year old licence (she learnt late) and 4 years NCD (earned on a 750cc Daf :) ) and it came in at £195 fully comp with a free Oleg.

As mentioned earlier about Mercs, most of the ones still around have been well looked after to have survived this far and, even at that sort of age, they're a far nicer place to be sat than a tin eurobox!

An old vag 1.9 tdi is all you need, I'm on my third.
The older 110bhp would be my pick, when chipped is quicker and gives better mpg than the 130pd.

An old 90's Passat would do you proud.

Isn't it funny that, when overall costs are considered, those old cars are unbeatable by (and will probably last longer than) today's allegedly super-efficient spacehips?

Let's not tell everyone or the government may have more of them scrapped...... :j
  • Also a 1.9 vag tdi fan, recently bought a Passat 90 bhp, and in the past couple of years we've had an Audi 80 and a 110 Passat.

All were over 220k miles when bought.

Another family member has the Bora 110bhp as well.

All of the above could be run on a veg oil/diesel mix too, saving a bit of cash.

That aside, recently got rid of a 1994 Merc 250d Auto the other day. That was on 154k miles, the engine/box were great. Would recommend one of those too.

My 110's always returned 54mpg no matter what.
Even the one on nearly 200k with a jamming turbo.
This pd130 is a little off that, is annoying - 'better' injection less mpg.

I do 7k miles a year for work, and not much else - fwd diesel doesn't make me jump in car and go for a joy ride.
It's not so much the mpg, but mpg-performance.
I'm sure I could get a petrol to match the mpg, but in this price range it would be slower than continental drift, and small and noisy and a womans car.
This thing flies changing gear at 2k revs, suits me just fine.
Done an oil change on it and think that's it in nearly 2 years really. Road tax is £175, insurance is just over £200.
Cheap motoring with mpg and comfort and a bit of poke.
Only downside is it's fwd and green.

Yep, that about sums them up. Curious thing with the "bit of poke" is that the older generation often seem to have that more where you actually want it - around the 40 - 70mph area - rather than good-on-paper 0-60 times.

Both of ours (the Pug and the BMW) are quoted around the 12 - 13 sec mark 0-60 but will absolutely fly past things in the mid-range. And I'm too old to be playing at traffic lights :D

As for the green - get some matt black and go camo on it!
