I always buy high mileage cars though my current one was high even for me at 230,000 when I bought it.
Far rather buy a car that's been properly serviced several times per year than one neglected that just chugs to the shops and back.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

Let's not tell everyone or the government may have more of them scrapped...... :j
Prices seem to be very resilient for them.
Maybe we should stop telling others as it's reducing the scope for bargainsRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Going back to the Vectra I own the 1.9 cdti manual but this one is the 120 bhp, The 150bhp is the one with the swirl valve manifold problems.
As with all cars it's down to servicing and oil changes a good service record is vital, at 100k the problems will have been fixed or the car wouldn't have got to that mileage, Most taxis use the 120 cdti seen many with over 200k.
Auto box so long as the oil is changed approx. 30k the box should do well, They fail when there not getting fresh oil.0 -
Thanks for all the replies. Fortunately for me (but unfortunately for the seller), the Vectra I was going to buy croaked it before going to view it.
Having looked at numerous cars on Autotrader, most of the cars below £1,000 seem to have done 100k+ so it might just be something I'll have to risk.
Still quite keen on the Vectra's but would want one of the newer shape ones that are 2006 onwards, however, they're around £2,000 so might have to keep saving for a while.0 -
I always buy cars with between 120 - 130,000 miles. Normally my yearly mileage is low so not a problem.
Ive put on more miles than usual with the current Mondeo though, now past 170,000 miles since buying in 2009 and its still going strong.
6 monthly oil changes in my opinion helps keep the engine healthy, I do lots of short journeys so sometimes it barely gets warm or its a lot of stop start type journeys also.
Its cost just over £1000 in repairs and MOTs etc since buying it. £3500 for 5 years motoring and if i sold it now someone would snap my hand off for £500 - £1000.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
As you seem to like Vauxhalls, what about a Signum?
They weren't successful, so are usually pretty cheap on the used market.0 -
I am currently looking for a used car on a tight budget and I must say I'm really struggling. I want something reasonably economical so was thinking of getting a Diesel, and it needs to be an Automatic as I've only got an automatic license, but everything that looks half decent has over 100,000 miles on the clock otherwise is out of my price range (about £1500 max).
I want to avoid Ford cars (because their automatics are awful), so can anyone advise what cars to look out for?
I'm going to look at a 2005 Vectra on Sunday but that has 137k on it so really not sure, although it's only £1000.
Would recommend a Toyota Corolla or Avensis - strong engines, they cope really well with high mileage and have chain belts so cheap to service.0 -

Unfortunately, Ford Automatics are pieces of junk (well in my experience anyway), so I wouldn't buy another Ford.OddballJamie wrote: »As you seem to like Vauxhalls, what about a Signum?

To be honest, it's not so much about liking Vauxhalls. I've only got limited experience with regards to cars as I've only been driving for 4.5 years, however, out of the 4 cars I've owned, one was a 1995 Vauxhall Vectra that I learnt to drive in, one was a 1999 Vauxhall Astra Estate (died after 6 months as garage used wrong oil and seized the oil pump) and two were Ford Fiesta's (a 2003 and a 2012) and the Vauxhalls were both much better than the Fiestas. The Vauxhalls just felt better made.
I am interested in looking at other cars so I'm not only looking at Vauxhalls on Autotrader, I did see a Mazda MX-3 that looked really nice and I quite like the Saabs (although I've heard Saab parts aren't cheap).
With regards to a Signum, there don't seem to be many available but will keep them in mindwrightman90 wrote: »Would recommend a Toyota Corolla or Avensis - strong engines, they cope really well with high mileage and have chain belts so cheap to service.
Thanks, I'll take a look at Toyotas.0 -
Another problem is about a year ago my current car had to go in for repair due to someone hitting it, and whilst it was in repair, I had a 2012 VW Passat as a courtesy car, and it was pure luxury. Getting back into a 2012 Fiesta felt like a bag of bones to be honest, so even though I'm on a limited budget, I want something that feels quality if that makes sense.0

my peugeot has 360 thousand on the clock. Not one major issue so far
if you listen to the idiots on here it should have died 15 years ago and i would have been lucky to get it to 36k
perhaps my French car was the cause of ebola or similar0
