  • my peugeot has 360 thousand on the clock. Not one major issue so far

if you listen to the idiots on here it should have died 15 years ago and i would have been lucky to get it to 36k

perhaps my French car was the cause of ebola or similar

Pre-2004 PSA diesels are great, especially the old 1.9.

Unfortunately, Ford Automatics are pieces of junk (well in my experience anyway), so I wouldn't buy another Ford.

Maybe because people service them on the cheap and forget the gearbox needs oils also.

Have the gearbox serviced every few years and it will last as long as the engine quite easily.
    200,000+ shouldnt be a problem.

Neglected oil changes on the box is what kills most of them. People assume they are sealed for life. They are not.

Well that's certainly not the case with my 2012 Fiesta than has only ever been serviced by theFord dealer. Every couple of weeks it comes up with a transmission malfunction fault that effects the changing of the gears.

Another problem is about a year ago my current car had to go in for repair due to someone hitting it, and whilst it was in repair, I had a 2012 VW Passat as a courtesy car, and it was pure luxury. Getting back into a 2012 Fiesta felt like a bag of bones to be honest, so even though I'm on a limited budget, I want something that feels quality if that makes sense.

That to me is screaming for an old Merc or BMW 5 series, as mentioned.

My '99 BMW 540i cost me £1300 + a knackered old Peugeot 306 (from ebay for £200 six months prior) a year and a half ago.

Done 25k since then. It's needed an alternator (which was £300 as it's a watercooled one, which is admittedly not as cheap as they get, but it was the easiest alternatator I've ever changed despite being watercooled and fitted to a 4.4l V8!) and the brakes cleaning for last MOT, and I've serviced it twice.

You'll obviously want a diesel; the older 525tds will be within budget and should do the best part of 40mpg, likewise for a similar Merc C/E class.

That said, the 4.4l V8 is suprisingly not bad (low 20s town + country roads, low 30s motorway). My cousin and mum have similar 528i petrols which do high 20s to mid 30s. All cars are ludicrously reliable and, if you like driving, are very fast!

Thanks, I will have a look at the BMW's as well :)

As has been mentioned, try a Signum, if you can find one, a seriously under-rated car that VX badly marketed. With BMWs, I wouldn't bother with the 525 diesel, it is slower and thirstier than the vastly superior 530 and there's a lot knocking about.

Tried looking at the Signums and there were only 2 and they were much more expensive than an equivelant Astra or Vectra.

I've been looking at the BMW 530's and they're seriously nice cars, out of my price range at the moment, so I am still looking for a £1000(ish) bargain, but think I'll be saving up for a 2004/2005 one :)

Have you looked at older Passats? Won't be the same luxury as the 2012 one but still very well build cars and with the PD 130 engine are economical, reliable and fairly quick.

I haven't to be honest, mainly because the 2012 one I had cost me an absolute fortune in Diesel. It cost much more than my Fiesta, and my Fiesta only gets about around 30MPG.

No idea what that was then. My 2007 gets 50+ mpg on a run and averages 47. My old 2000 model TDI got 50mpg consistently.
