I'm very sorry to have sparked the same EU discussion on this thread. You have already posted these opinions and views.
Clapton... do you think your points could be used to negotiate a better deal with the EU? So the UK gets a subsidy for the number of migrants it takes?
Also, Hamish, have you considered that all of the poeple that migrate here might one day return to their home countries? I work with one of them, she is a very talented has PhD and is late 20's, and she has returned to Spain, to only work here in UK 25% of her time.Peace.0 -

The UK is already subsidised by those migrants.
They have subsidised the native born to the tune of billions of pounds.Hamish, have you considered that all of the poeple that migrate here might one day return to their home countries? Yes, absolutely, a large number of them will.
Which means we get the benefit of their work and economic input, without the costs of their childhood or retirement.
An absolutely fantastic deal for the UK, massive net subsidy, even more of a net subsidy than those who stay.
Of course we still need millions more immigrants to make up for the missing millions of young people, and best to err on the high side given, as you rightly point out, many will return home without breeding and contributing to the stock of British youngsters.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

yes of course; Hamish has the figures for the number of immigrants over the past 60 years that have
-not had children and settled here
-and have gone home
obviously he hasn't factored in the foreign exchange costs and subsequent debts incurred
or of the increase in infrastructure spending
or the damage to the lives of the people in London and the SE
or the enormous extra details, travel time
but then they aren't very apparent if you live in Aberdeen.0 -
the 'research that provides these limited and arbitrary figures was funded by the EU. He who pays the piper calls the tune.
Thats a load of complete and utter disingenuous nonsense though.....
UCL's total income in 2012-13 was £940 million, of which only £39 million came from the EU.
That’s just 4.1% of their total income.
Any proven claim of bias (and these stats are easily checked by other researchers) would terminally damage the reputation of the university, and would kill individual researchers’ access to research funding in future.
If you are gullible enough to believe the cries of the anti-immigration zealots that all research into migration is tainted by the fact that most Universities receive tiny amounts of funding from the EU, you are even more biased than I thought.:(“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

If I lived in London I'd still be calling for millions more immigrants.
We need to replace the millions of missing young people somehow, or this country is doomed, through an imbalanced age profile.
Whereas you seem not to care....
Is your hatred of immigration and desire for a smaller Britain really worth condemning millions of people to a life of penury over?“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

LOL. I was listening to that on the interwebs last night as the ABC evening show isn't really to my taste.
I'm yet to meet someone with a BASc in English and Maths but well done her for taking on such a challenging degree. I can't help but think that she'd be a little wasted on sandwich production.
A little off-topic, but I have a degree in Maths and French (so not a million miles away)
Keele offers degrees in English and any one of Accounting, Astrophyiscs, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics (amongst other things) http://www.keele.ac.uk/ugcourses/english/#tabs-3 if she's not a Keele graduate, the chances of it being true start to decline
(But I agree, could do better than production line making of sandwiches) 0 -

UCL didn't write the report: a couple of specific individuals wrote the report who, would of course, be concerned to protect their future sponsorship funding
do you know ANYTHING at all about academic funding?
1. did you believe the academic reports funded by the tobacco companies showing no relation between lung cancer and smoking?
2. did you belief the research that showed that lead in petrol was harmless; obviously funded by the motor industry
3. do you belief the research funded by the pharma companies about the effectiveness of their own drugs?
of course you do!
I haven't claimed the numbers were wrong : merely that they have left out huge costs and massive adverse impacts on the existing people of this country
4. anyway what are the figures for returning immigrants over the last 50-60 years ?
5. what are the negative impact on the balance of payments and subsequent extra borrowing?
answer the above questions rather than repeating the same rubbish.0 -
t
the figures exclude
Any negative effect on the home economies of these migrants, and perhaps additional levies the UK subsequently has to pay into the EU pot due to the relative success of the economy caused by these migrants being economically active in the UK and not in their home economy.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0
