Strange how the usual suspects try to draw the EU and 'foreigners' into this debate. The only issue here is our benefits system being too generous. This is not imposed by the EU.

Not as simple as that though is it. Where I am a 2 bed house would be over £1000 a month including council tax which is what someone on minimum wage would take home.

Yeah, but the woman who phoned 5Live also claimed she had a degree in "Maths and English"

I'm yet to meet someone with a BASc in English and Maths but well done her for taking on such a challenging degree. I can't help but think that she'd be a little wasted on sandwich production.

It sounds a bit of an odd combination for a joint honours degree, and a bit specific in scope for an Open University "open" degree. Mind you, I had someone tell me they had three degrees, and what they meant was they had an HND that had three topics. I'm not really sure if this was intentional self-aggrandising, or a genuine misunderstanding of their qualifications.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

Ok, someone on NMW would struggle to rent a 2 bed house in your area.

    And?
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

She claimed that she had a degree in 'maths and English' and had failed the written test to get a job in the factory.

I've done a couple of written tests for manual work and administered several. The level is generally along the lines of:

    a. Which is the larger number 5 or 10?
    b. Would you rather have £4 or 2 lots of £2.50?

It's primary school stuff. As you can imagine, working on a production line or similar doesn't require a massive intellect but they do want someone that can do more than tie their own shoe laces.

I don't believe that anyone who could gain entry to a university could fail such a test. It's simply not plausible.

They wouldn't struggle it would be impossible someone on the median earnings would struggle would be left with £600 a month after rent so 50% of population would struggle.

Well you say that, but I've got more than one degree and I can't see how to work out which I would rather have using calculus.

If you're going to use median earnings, maybe use average rents also.

There the lowest rents a 1 bed might reduce the cost by £200 a month. I think things are pretty bad when 50% of population can not afforded a family without state help.

one speculates what the company would do if there wasn't the option of importing cheap labour?

    pay more?
    don't make the product?
invest in automation of some sort?

what we all know is, that with a semi infinite supply of cheap labour, there is no real incentives to invest to become more productive.

our benefits system is of course a disincentive for people to better themselves or even get a job at all.
