No one will do the job

....Or will they?

Anyone shed any wisdom on what's really going on here?

Greencore, a company which makes sandwiches for the likes of M&S is saying that it cannot find anyone in the UK to carry out 300 jobs that they are looking to hire for in 2016

Therefore, they say they are advertising the jobs not in the UK, but in Hungary. Presumably Hungarians would then come over here to carry out the role.

However, this has caused some anger, as people phoned into 5Live stating they had been to group interviews at Greencore for previous jobs, and NONE of those in the groups got jobs.

These claims would appear to be true, as Greencore made use of government funding designed to create more jobs for people in Northamptonshire. Therefore, you'd assume that they would have had to prove they are offering roles etc.

So, on the basis that it caused a stir amongst the people who had been for interviews wanting the jobs, and the fact that Greencore say they cannot find people in the UK.....what's the truth? Why would they go to Hungary to find workers?

    Hung up my suit!
There's no incentive to do these jobs as people are better off on benefits. Simples !!

I would not commit to a NMW job with start date over a year away.

After reading some of the comments this ia a bit of a none thread, so I apologise.

It appears that the company is simply a terrible employer, well known in the area. They've sacked people en'masse to replace them with casual labour from agencies. They now offer zero hour contracts where you have to be available weekends etc 'if they want you'. Numerous wage problems and an "inhumane atmosphere".

So seems it's just a dire employer having to go elsewhere to capture more desperate people.

Edit: And this would seem to back up the people phoning in to 5 live:
Hundreds of redundant Solway Foods workers in Corby attended an open day staged by a food factory aiming to recruit 200 people.
Greencore of Northampton held the event on Monday (March 31) at the Holiday Inn, Corby, and 130 people signed in during the first half hour.

Greencore appear to blame people not wanting to ork. Seems more a case of people not wanting to work based on the conditions they are offering.

On the contrary Graham. I agree .

Greencore are exploiting the UKs benefit system by offering jobs at the NMW abroad with the added attraction that on top of the NMW they'll receive tax credits and HB here in the UK .

    Nuff said . :)

Try these benefits calculators... It is quite an eye opener...

On a part time 24 hr week job earning 15k per yr, family of 4 with only 1 parent working and with 1 boy and 1 girl , the cash in pocket is approx 27k per yr inc wage plus all the benefits. That includes living in a privately rented 3 bed place.

For working only part time that is far too good in my opinion. There is no incentive to work when the benefits are better than working! It means also that it creates generation rent for life, while the government lines the pockets of buy to letters, the part of society that bother to vote?!. See for yourself on these sites:

We need hard facts and not opinion on all of these EU debates?

We need to see official figures from trusted and reliable sources, for the number of non UK born residents from the EU working here, their salaries and how much they are claiming in benefits.
    Peace.

    True.

I don't think people want this situation though. I think, in gereral, most would rather provide for their own families. They just need the opportunity to do so.

That opportunity has to be a real opportunity though. Zero hour contracts, minimum wage part time jobs. They don't fit the bill. Why would any mother or father take the risk of doing this, alongside the hassle (not only time constraints, but childcare, fitting in around schooltimes etc), for so little in return when in reality....they simply don't have to.

Tax credits are becoming rather silly now. And I don't blame the workers, I blame the government and large business, and in some cases, being part of the EU allowing all this to happen.

The program on C4 made me think tonight, were the most unequal country in Europe when it comes to wealth and pay. This is masked by the benefit system, a system which is bit by bit destroying us....it's unaffordable.

Take away the benefit system overight and you'd see the inequality in stark action. Hundreds of thousands would litterally be on the streets. BTL landlords would be looking for any exit strategy they could.

Instead, we've got companies like Greencore trying to further exploit the situation and drive down wages and conditions yet further. This seems to bring out the worst of being in the EU, the worst of the benefits system and the worst of capitalism all in one news story.

Worst of it all? I could become a leftie very soon - if I haven't already if this all carries on!

If the jobs are lucrative and available then why aren't they being taken by people who could walk to the factory?

Are these benefit calculators only visible to foreigners.

The whole point is that they are available but NOT lucrative.
  • The whole point is that they are available but NOT lucrative.

    Not lucrative?

Or just not lucrative by comparison to our overly generous and bloated welfare system?

If you can rake in 27K per year cash in pocket for working 24 hrs a week part time and getting benefits, that's a BIG part of the problem.....

No wonder locals don't want to work when you can get paid that much to slack off as a part timer!!!
